We will be visiting Portugal in May. We’re definitely visiting Lisbon for a few days. We only have a short time in Portugal so we’re trying to decide on Algarve or Porto. We like seeing and hearing the sounds of the ocean but we’re not into sunbathing. Thanks.
Porto will give you all you are looking for except it will be cooler than the Algarve. The Metro in Porto serves the beach area and the little cafes near the beach have outstanding and reasonably priced fish dinners that you can leisurely either at early afternoon or for dinner. I would also suggest that you put tasteporto.com for a food tour on one of the days you are there.
Porto is special, as is the VERY scenic Douro River Valley. Do 2-3 days there as well as taking the train up the river valley to Regua and/or Pinhao. The train runs along the north side of the river.
Yes, going to Portugal for the beach you miss so much more.
I will add my vote for Porto over the Algarve any day. Such a unique city and area with the Douro. If you want to see and hear the sea, there are beaches close to both Lisbon and Porto.
