Algarve choices

We are travelling to Portugal at the beginning of October. We have decided we would like to spend two nights in Tavira (hotel near the river), and are thinking maybe 2 nights somewhere else where we could get a different spot closer to/walkable to the ocean (or at least within sight/sound/smell of it!). We live on the Atlantic here in Nova Scotia, but not close enough to hear it as we sleep. For me, that makes for a perfect vacation spot, even if there's no way it'll be warm enough to get in the water.

My husband has the impression that Lagos is touristy, is that accurate? Otherwise, Lagos has a lot to recommend it, it seems. I would also like a place where we can walk to beaches (from a parking lot, as we WILL have a car) without a lot of stairs or climbing, as he has a bad knee.

I know the Algarve isn't everyone's first choice in this forum, but please, we are specifically looking for suggestions for the Algarve, not alternatives further north.

The Algarve is touristy but Lagos does not have the high rise hotels as the you'll see traveling from Tavira to Lagos. Even better is Salema that's west of Lagos.
