Advice on one day in Sintra with kids. Is this too much?

Hello,

My family and I will be traveling to Portugal next month and plan to take a day trip from Lisbon to Sintra, via train.

We would like to see Peña Palace, the Moorish Castle and the grounds of Quinta da Regaleria. We are also considering a tile painting workshop that runs from 3-5 p.m. Is this doable (and enjoyable) in one day? Our group will consist of 2-3 adults plus 3 kids aged 7-11.

Thank you!

Three out of the four activities is doable with a break for lunch in between them. I think doing all four is probably too much for one day. It’s quite likely that the two-hour painting class for the kids starting at 3pm is a bridge too far.

Quinta da Regaleria would be fun for the kids. And I would pick either Pena or Moorish Castle. Then if everyone still has the energy, add a third palace. Personally, I wouldn't take a tile painting class while in Sintra. There is so much outside to see there.

I would cut out the Peña Palace with the kids and do the Moorish castle, get lunch and then tile painting. Just my opinion after traveling with 7 and 10 year olds.

Thank you all for this advice. I think we will consider doing two separate day trips to Sintra to fit in everything, or else try to do the Palace, Castle and Quinta da Regaleria all in one day and try tile painting in Lisbon.

We had 6 people in our group. We found it cheaper, faster and more convenient to use a bolt rideshare (or uber) to go door-to-door from our Lisbon apartment to the front entrance of the Pena Palace. We book the earliest timed admission online and beat the morning crowds. The average cost per person was cheaper than taking the train from Lisbon and sintra bus. We even used the bolt to go home at the end of the day.
