Advice for surf camp, Lisbon and south coast

Hello,

We are planning a trip to Portugal in early July 2016. We will fly into Lisbon form Paris and then probably form Lisbon ( or Faro) to Rome then we Fly home from Venice.

We will have a week in Portugal and out hopes are to have two days in Lisbon then to go south to Surf. We have read a lot about the surf camps and we understand that we can not predict the surf so we want to stay somewhere beautiful, with good seafood and interesting people on the south coast. What ideas does anyone have ideas of places to stay for a family of four or a surf camp?

For the one day in Lisbon we would like to take a tour. Any suggestions for a a tour guide, place to stay and car rental?

Thanks!

Karen

Hello Karen- I just googled "Portugal surf camp" and a lot of options appeared. After you have decided which part of Portugal you want to explore you can see if there is a camp in that area. A good website to help you out specific to surfing around the world is: www.wannasurf.com. Good Luck and have fun

I just saw your post and you may already have your plans but here are my thoughts. I was in the Algarve about 5 years ago and growing up at the beach in California was surprised by all the surf camps. We stayed in the RS recommended Salema which I understand has been built up since our visit. The south facing beach was lovely but more for swimming and body surfing. On our way back to Lisbon, we stopped at Carrapeteria which faces West (Atlantic Ocean) and is home to multiple surf camps. The beach was spectacular but it was insanely windy. Definitely better for kite and wind surfing. I am a strong swimmer and was reluctant going into the chopping water. If you want something relaxing, I suggest finding a small village on the south coast to stay and visiting the west coast as a day trip.

I enjoyed Lisbon but if you have time I definitely recommend the 1 hour train trip to Sintra and the hike up to the European style castle and he moorish ruins. One of my favorite places I have ever visited.
