Advice for first timer to Portugal

We spend a month or so in Paris each spring and fall and like to add on another destination. (we used to travel more widely and move about more but age, no longer driving, and my husband's limitations make primarily being in one place work better. Last Fall we spent a couple of weeks in Florence (a repeat trip), the next spring we did a week in Limerick with friends. This fall we spent a few days in Metz.

So we are thinking of doing a week or maybe two in Portugal this coming fall probably after September in Paris. I am just starting to read about possible destinations. We would like advice on a place to consider for at least a week, that has good transport, is walkable, scenic -- a place to 'be' rather than rush about 'doing'. What are some places I should be looking at for a week in Portugal -- we might do two cities if we make it two weeks. We would want to rent apartments in each place as we mostly cook in when we travel, partly for medical reasons. We would fly home from Portugal. Into Paris; out of (Portugal).

thanks for any ideas you can share.

We just returned from 2 weeks in Portugal and a few extra days in Madrid. The weather was perfect. Lisbon and Porto have so many hills it was tough for my husband to navigate on foot, so we relied on uber and tuktuks to get around. We stayed in air bnbs. Definitely take a day trip or cruise from Porto through the Duoro Valley to see the vineyards. Obidos, Lamego and Guimeraes are worth a trip from Porto as well. Rented a car in Lisbon and drove to Sintra one day and to Porto the next day. Parking in Porto was challenging. If I had to choose between Porto and Lisbon, it would be Porto. Across the river from Porto is Gaia, that has a fishing community and restaurants that grill Sardines over open coals. So yummy!
