Accommodations in evora

We’re planning a redo of our Portugal itinerary that didn’t happen in 2020 . We had planned to stay at Albergaria do Calvario - it doesn’t look like there’s availability when we planned to be in the area so I am hoping to get suggestions for mid range places within the city walls - we’re light sleepers so quiet location is important. We won’t have a car so easy access to public transport is also a must.

Appreciate suggestions for places with charm (not interested in the business hotels or chain hotels)

Hi Sherin,
My wife and I are staying almost a week in Evora this October. We will be staying in an Airbnb inside the walls etc. We have not been there previously, but I did enough homework to feel comfortable. Are you staying in Evora long enough to warrent a flat?

Thank you! We’re planning on staying two nights. We’ll be coming from coimbra. It looks like the trains tend to go via Lisbon and the busses are a long journey. Curious if you’ve found a direct train from coimbra to evora or thoughts about the ease of a one way car rental from coimbra to evora.

We are coming from Lisbon and renting a car there to explore a bit.
Train from Santa Apolonia station is about 1.5 hrs
Would have no interest in the long drive from Combria. But then, I am not a fan of long drives anymore

The drive from Coimbra to Evora is just under 3 hours and could be achieved using a road with no toll. Before changing our itinerary and eliminating southern Portugal on an upcoming trip, we were looking at Hotel Moov Évora, partly because it has parking. It’s just over a mile from the train station.

I will add that renting a car in Portugal is very expensive, hence the reason we are renting in Madrid. The 21 day rental was $900 less than if we had rented in Lisbon. I looked at Europcar for a one way, one day rental in September from Coimbra to Évora, and a compact (Citroen C4 Cactus) was $288. Drop off and return to the same location would have been $195, so the $93 one way drop fee is pretty hefty for a 255km/153mi drive. There are supposedly other rental companies serving both cities, e.g., Thrifty, and Hertz.

We stayed at the Pousada dos Loios in Evora. It is within the city walls but you’d have to check current rates.

We stayed at the Valeriana Guest House in 2019. We loved it. Wonderful people working there. Great location. Clean, spacious rooms. Excellent breakfast. We would stay there again. Be aware that there is a stairway up to the reception/breakfast area, then more stairs up to rooms. But the helpful young people that work there will carry your bags. The hotel staff arranged for our tour of the Cromlech which was excellent, and they arranged for our transportation (a private driver) to our next destination (Beja), making suggestions on sites to see along the way.
