9 nights - Portugal and Madrid - Thoughts??

OK,

My wife and kids are planning a trip for the first week in April.

My plan now is to fly into Lisbon stay 2 nights, then take a train to Porto, stay 2 nights. From there, fly to Madrid and stay 5 nights, while taking day trips to places like Toledo, etc...

So, I've been to Madrid before, but my wife and teenagers haven't. None of us have been to Portugal.

Any thoughts on a good itinerary?

Flying from the US, I would definitely not be satisfied with two nights in Lisbon. Your first day will probably not be very productive because of insufficient sleep on the plane and jet lag. If you are not planning to hit the big art museums in Madrid, I would move one night from Madrid to Lisbon. If you're big on art, I'm not sure what to suggest. I preferred Lisbon to Porto, but others might disagree.

Lisbon warrants another day, then you could visit Cascais. It will take 5 hours door to door for Lisbon to Porto and your 2 nights there means only 1 full day. Porto is a pleasant city and you can take a trip on the river. Your call if you think that the travel time warrants just one full day there.

Early April means school and university holidays for Easter, so places will be busier and more expensive, if not already booked up, so don't delay booking!
