9 days in May - Portugal or Sicily ( or Southern Italy]

We’re starting to plan for a 9 day trip with my girls 20 and 21 in late May. We’ve been to central/northern Italy so considering Southern Italy or Portugal (Algarve , Madeira). We enjoy coastal towns and landscapes but also great food , wine and history. Any suggestions of which might be better and towns/ must see places? Thanks!

Such different places!
I loved Sicily, but then I love Italy in total. And, Sicily is Italy but a bit different. The food is even better than the mainland IMO. And, for history, it’s spectacular with Agrigento and too many places to mention. I didn’t go to the beaches, so can’t speak to them.

The Algarve is all about the beaches and, admittedly, not my favorite part of Portugal. The seafood is wonderful, though. The rock formations are spectacular but the history is more limited than Sicily.
With nine days, you don’t have time for Madeira.
I would encourage you to do some research on both places and see which ones has you more excited.

I love Madeira. I'd think a combination of Madeira and Lisbon could work if you have a full 9 days in Portugal. I'd want at least four full days in Madeira.

Sicily really needs about two weeks if you want to cover the island pretty well--and that's with a car.

I'd say the Algarve is very much the lesser option. I suspect there are not non-stop flights to Madeira from the Algarve.
