9 day trip Lisbon and Porto or just Lisbon

I’ve been reading the boards and guidebooks and getting overwhelmed. I’m traveling to Lisbon next week and the first few days are work/pleasure including an all day guided tour of Lisbon and a half day in Sintra. I am staying In Cascais for 3 nights and fly in and out of Lisbon.

This leaves me with 5 days and 5 nights open. One full day in Lisbon before the work stuff and 4 full days and 5 nights after.

Our thought right now is to train from Cascais to Porto (via Lisbon) Wednesday night, arriving around 8:30 pm and returning to Lisbon Saturday morning and staying 2 nights before a midday flight out of Lisbon Monday. Also tempted to stop either overnight (Wednesday) in Coimbra or for a few hours on our way back. We are flexible and there are decent budget lodging options still open.

Too ambitious? Too little time in Lisbon? Critique and advice please!

Karyn,
When you say this...

This leaves me with 5 days and 5 nights open. One full day in Lisbon before the work stuff and 4 full days and 5 nights after.

Are you counting the day of arrival as day one?

Does your full day in Lisbon include the guided tour?

There are plenty of things to do and see in Lisbon to keep you busy for 4 days ( 5N), but I can understand wanting to see
Porto, and Coimbra, as well.

If I had your time constraints, I’d definitely take the train to Porto!

I’d also stop for an overnight in Coimbra to visit the beautiful university, and the various churches.

We visited all the places on your list and enjoyed them all!

Have a wonderful trip!

U could be busy staying and seeing Lisbon alone. Gulbenkian museum is fabulous as is the Monastery of San J, Belem tower, Carriage museum, experience fado one night, Porto is nice but pales in comparison to Lisboa. Coimbra highlight is the university library , leave for another trip.
Lisboa is great do not rush it.

Great clarification questions. I arrive on Sunday morning and have the day free. I tend to do ok after long international flights so plan to spend some time in Lisbon before heading to Cascais. Monday is working and Cascais. Tuesday is an all day tour of Lisbon with a group, not entirely sure what’s included. Wednesday morning is Sintra, back at Cascais at 3 pm. The Monday-Wednesday are not flexible. Then Wednesday 4 pm- Monday morning is all play.

You will want to be in Lisbon/Cascais on Sunday night to be sure you get to your flight on time. That leaves 4 nights, 3.5 days. Monday, you won't have time to do much more than breakfast and go to the airport.

You could spend 2N in Coimbra. Door-to-door, you'll barely have time for dinner on Wednesday. Thursday in Coimbra, early Friday train to Porto 2N and evening train back to Lisbon, though maybe afternoon train if you're staying in Cascais. I had one full day (2N) in Coimbra but I linger at places. You may find that a full day is too much. If you aren't sure, you could skip it and spend 4N in Porto with a day trip to Aveiro or the Douro Valley.

We just finished the RS Portugal tour and Porto was our favorite city. Three stops seems like too many for the length of your stay.
Stops in Lisbon and Porto would give you two quite different impressions of Portugal. Perhaps taking a part of the day(s) in Porto to do a partial cruise up the Duro Valley which is stunning. If you love wine(port) or would like to learn to like , Porto is the place.

Hello from Wisconsin,
I would find a nice place to stay in Lisbon, book it for the full time. Then arrange an over night to Evora (much closer than Porto), smaller and has a great restaurant that will make your trip. The restaurant is Botequim da Mouraria. Get to the restaurant one half hour before it opens. Very limited seating (8 or 9 people). Plus Evora has plenty of things to see including a bone house if you haven't seen one before. An excellent old university and its library. Get there early one day, stay late into the evening the next night.

Don't spend your time on a train, bus or plane getting to Porto and back with something as nice as Evora so close.
