8 days!

Hello all

My hubby and I have a quick trip to Portugal in April - 8 days - flying in and out of Lisbon. He will run a half marathon in Aveiro three days after we arrive. I thought we might take the train north from Lisbon, stay in Aveiro for a two days, explore Porto, then work our way back down toward Lisbon.

Questions:

Would it be better to rent a car, and if so, any special advice (need an international license? recommended rental agencies?)

What must-see stops, sites, and overnight stays would you recommend on this route?

I know it's going to be a whirlwind trip, but it's all the time we can commit right now!
Thanks in advance!

Of course, you are going to want to go to Sintra when in Lisbon but I would also like to recommend Belem which is just as interesting and also very pretty with a lot to do.

I was on a. cruise and ported in Porto but chose to take an excursion to Braga which is very interesting and beautiful.

I think that you will get to see a lot of Portugal in eight days.

I was in :Lisbon late October and it rained almost every day plus it was still very crowded.

Inside Lisbon and Porto a car is more of a hindrance, use the public transit, everywhere else a car is a plus, giving more flexibility to explore the small towns.

We use Auto Europe ( it's an aggregator) the most important ( regardless of which rental agency) is to purchase the insurance directly from the car rental agency and not from a third party, that will save a lot of hassle from "damage" charges.

Don't need an international license in Portugal but I always take mine ( they are free for members of the auto club).

From Porto to Lisbon ( by car) if you're beach people some of the town's you may want consider Figueira da Foz, Nazaré, São Martinho do Porto, Peniche, Ericeira, Cascais.

If the beach is not your interest, Coimbra, Tomar, Óbidos, Sintra.
