7 nights in Portugal - Porto, Lisbon and Algarve

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are in our forties and we plan visit Portugal for 7 nights in late September. We will fly in from Paris CDG and back to Paris after our Portugal trip. We are looking at the following itinerary:

  • Fly into Porto and arrive in afternoon - 2 nights

  • Train to Lisbon/Sintra - 3 nights

  • Rent a car and drive to Algarve area - 2 nights

  • Drive to Faro or Lisbon and fly out to Paris

While we are foodies, we don't drink so we plan to skip Douro Valley. We are looking for your advice on:

  1. Can we cover the must-sees and dos in the 3 areas mentioned? Or should we look to skip Porto or the Algarve?
  2. It looks like driving makes sense if we want to cover the various town in the Algarve area. Or should we take bus/car-hire from Lisbon to and while in the Algarve?
  3. Any other suggestion?

Thanks much.

Seven days is barely enough time for Lisbon and Porto, so I would skip the Algarve, which caters for mass tourism. If your trip is next month rather than next year, the best accommodation in the Algarve will be booked, as September is popular for those not tied to school holidays who want to hit the beach or play golf.

Even if you don’t drink, the Douro is stunning scenery.

You don’t need a car for just Lisbon and Porto, as the train service is good, but a car would be useful if you want to explore the area between these cities.
