48 hours in Lisbon

We have a 48 hour layover in Lisbon. Plan to use Metro to travel from airport to city.
Would like suggestions on what area/neighborhood to stay in Lisbon and
Would like suggestions on a b/b or small hotel, reasonably priced to stay for the 2 nights.
Trip planned for the 1st of November 2025.

Back in September we stayed at the Altis Belém Hotel on the waterfront in the beautiful Belém area. It's about a 20-minute tram ride into central Lisbon. BTW - using Uber to go from/to the airport is more efficient than public transportation and fairly priced. Enjoy your layover!

Hi Carl/Sandy,

Where to stay in Lisbon is a personal choice. Each neighborhood has its own charms. One of the things that we fully didn't appreciate until we got to Lisbon is how hilly the city is. If you want to stay on flatter ground, then the Baixa neighborhood is centrally located near the water, shopping, and restaurants. For me, it was a little too touristy, but it is convenient with a lot of hotel options. Belem is an another area that is relatively flat, lots of historical attractions. The drawback from Belem is that is it not in the heart of Lisbon, so you will have to take Uber/Bolt or public transport to get to the areas of Lisbon.

If you don't mind the hills, then the Alfama area is the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon, great Fado, street art and quaint shops. My favorite area is Chiado. When I visited last October, stayed on the edge of Chiado and Barrio Alto. We were a few minutes from the metro, train station (to get to Sintra), Elevador da Gloria and had the most amazing viewpoints (miradouros), Miradouro San Pedro de alcantara was 5 minutes from our hotel and I spent every day it wasn't raining watching the sunset sipping my new favorite drink (port tonic). We stayed at Chiado Arty Flats. Super cool, modern small hotel with kitchenette. Our room had a great outdoor patio which I used even in the rain since part of it was covered.

One other tip since you are going in November. If it is raining, then walking up and down the hills can be slippery, so wear shoes with good traction.
