4 days to Explore. What to do?

I will be traveling to Europe for a wedding in early March. We have 4 full days (Mon-Thurs) to explore before we need to travel to the wedding location. We are planning to fly to the wedding anyways, so that’s not a logistics concern.

We are mainly considering Portugal or Spain. With 4 days, it is recommended to: stay and explore Lisbon/Portugal only, just Spain (not Barcelona), or split between Lisbon and Madrid? What would yall recommend for a couple in their early 30s that is looking for a nice adventure, enjoys more museums and local places to explore than going out/nightlife.

In case there is a good case for these, our other options considered but semi-ruled out have been: Switzerland/Austria (too expensive and likely need a car to drive around) or Scottish Highlands/Ireland.

I would stay in Lisbon the 4 days. So much to do-Belem Tower, Maritime Museum, Jerónimos Monastery (with Vasco da Gama's tomb), ride the iconic Tram 28, views from São Jorge Castle, Santa Justa Lift, National Tile Museum, eat Pastéis de Belém pastries, wander through the Alfama district, and enjoy a traditional Fado music performance.
Get Rick Steves guide book. We took a day trip with Lisbon Riders to Sintra that was fantastic.

I second Lisbon. Four days is enough to see the city and its major sights. Spain needs too much time, especially Madrid.

Hi Ashley, I would definitely recommend Madrid, especially since you mention museums and adventures. 4 days is perfect to to spend quality time visiting Madrid and its museums and to take day trips outside of the city. On different visits to Madrid, my husband and I have particularly enjoyed day trips to Toledo, Segovia, and Cuenca. Visitor is one way to find and book such day trips. From Cuenca you can also take the fast train AVE to Valencia which is a beautiful city with a lot of history, nice weather generally, and walking tours available.

These are wonderful suggestions and insights! We've been leaning towards Lisbon or Madrid, so I think this solidifies them as our top choices. I did Madrid a long time ago, but my boyfriend hasn't. We might split the difference and do a new to both of us spot - Portugal!

Thank you so much!!!!
