2-3 weeks in Portugal, Lisbon as a base, Late August early September

Just starting my research on various websites and forums.
We Loved our recent trips to Greece, Italy, Spain, Paris France
I have started looking at airbnb and Bookings.com. On our last trip we booked several airbnbs that were not up to their rating and although well located they had various issues of comfort or smells that don't make for a pleasant stay.
I find the accommodation and locations can really make or break a trip, for me at least...especially for longer stays.
Looking for good tips.
Best locations, hotel or apartment and length of time in a city before it is time to move on?
I thought maybe half the trip in a hotel and the other half in an apartment?
Appreciate the advice and input.
Thanks

We stayed in Lisbon for 5 nights (4 full days) recently. From my limited experience, I recommend staying in Baixa as it is close to most places one might want to visit; especially in walking distance to places like Rossio square (train to Sintra starts here), Placa de Figueras (trams and buses). Lots of restaurants in this area, easy access by public transportation to Belem, Sintra; can walk to St. George's castle, Alfama. We easily filled our time, even an extra day would have been fine.
Many hotels here. We stayed in apartment (AirBnB) and liked it. Let me know if you need more information.

For Lisbon, rent an apartment or house from American ex-Pats. Their company is named
“ VisitingPortugal.” We spent ten days in one of their properties.

we were in Portugal at that exact time last year. Flew into Lisbon (3 nts) and out of Porto (3 nts) with Lagos (4 nt) Evora (2 nt) Nazare (4 nt) in between. We picked up rental car on way out of Lisbon and dropped off entering Porto. We stayed in apartments in each city. In Lisbon, it was Flores de Alfama, right near Sao Miguel church. We loved this location. Although there was no air con, the room stayed cool with a fan despite the +30 degree heat. We would stay there again. Found it on booking.com. We found our itinerary to be great - we saw everything we wanted to see (and then some!) by day tripping from each of our locations. If you want the names of our other apartments send me a PM.
