18 nights Portugal itinerary help, please!

Hi all!

My mother and I have booked our flights for an 18 night trip to Portugal. We are flying in to Lisbon June 24 and departing Lisbon July 12. Our first 4 nights are in Lisbon, and then we were planning on driving south down the coast before turning a bit inland and staying for 4-5 nights in Alentejo (but by the coast). After that, we’re having a tough time. We both want this to be a very relaxed trip, with priorities being great scenery, great food, relaxing days, getting to know the country and it’s culture, surfing for me, wine for mom, great beaches, a few small towns and the history/architecture there, and a bit of the bigger cities. We don’t want to be in tourist traps/lines, or be rushing anywhere. We’re interested in Lisbon, Alentejo (coast and more inland near Monsaraz and Évora), Douro Valley, Porto, and beach towns between Lisbon and Porto such as Nazaré/Peniche, etc. Towns like Monsanto, Obidos, Aveiro also interest us. We were thinking of heading to a Évora after the Alentejo coast, then to Douro Valley, then Porto and back down via a beach town to Lisbon. However, we don’t want to be jumping spot to spot too much, but then don’t want to miss out. It’s 18 nights so we hope not to have more than 5 airbnbs, 3 of which already include our first and last nights in Lisbon, and Alentejo. We were originally doing this loop the other way (up to Porto first), but this seems to work better. Any advice after Alentejo on where to stay and for how long, in order to have the trip we want? We’re open to anything.

Thanks!

Portugal is my favorite European country, by far. I have been there 6 times over the last 2 years. 3 or 4 weeks each time.
Going to southern Portugal in June or July would be like going to Phoenix. I would go north. I really like the Algarve and have been to Evora, Elvas, Beja, etc. as well. I But it will be too hot for comfort. Even Braga is very hot in July and it is much farther north. I have always taken the train from Lisbon to Porto, but I believe driving along the coast would be great from Lisbon to Porto. Just be certain to see Caiscais and Cabo de Roca. I would stick to the coast and drive all the way to Caminha if you have time. Valenca and the nearby fort is a must see. There is a 2000 year old Roman mile marker inside the fort. If you have a little extra money stay overnight at the pousada on the north end of the fort. If you don't have time to go all the way north, take the train up the Duro valley leaving from from Porto. A truly incredible experience. And questions email me at [email protected]

My husband and I were in Portugal for three weeks in March and I have to say, that the previous two replies had some great information. I did want to add a couple of bits of information.
Here is a link to a website with information on some of the villages of Portugal. We spent some time in Soajo, near the Peneda-Geres National Park and getting outside of the large cities and more visited towns is so different! http://www.aldeiasportugal.pt/
Also, I think the people of Portugal are not accustomed to tourists taking the trouble to learn some Portuguese so they are very appreciative of any effort to speak Portuguese. We really felt like it enhanced our experience.
