12 Day Portugal Tour flights

Just starting to look into flights for the Portugal tour which begins in Lisbon and ends in Porto ( late October). I'm looking for advice on the flights. Those of you who have been on the tour - did you do a multi city booking (into Lisbon, return from Porto) or a round trip (in to Lisbon, return from Lisbon)?

For the multi city, the return flight from Porto seems really long and most options stop in Lisbon.

My question. Is it better to end the tour (in Porto) and take a train to Lisbon and do the return flight from Lisbon? OR is it easier to fly out of Porto on the return flight? Any other options?

We're flying from and to Boston if that helps.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

You could plan to stay in the country a few days after the tour ends, and visit place(s) between Porto and Lisbon on your way back to the Lisbon airport.

Hi - we flew TAP airlines from Boston to Lisbon and on the return Porto to Boston, which stopped in Lisbon before heading back home. We made that decision because we didn’t want to deal with trains and the flight $/schedule was reasonable. It was very easy to do.

Edited to add - we did the same tour in 2018

Amy, Thanks for the info. Was the flight from Porto really long? I'm seeing 20 hours.....(with the stop in Lisbon).

To the OP,

Try going directly to TAPs website and I suspect you will see many options that don’t involve a 20 hour layover.

I’m signed up for this tour in September and so far it seems that TAP has the best options.

I had to go back and look. it wasn’t long at all. We departed Porto at 08:30, arrived Lisbon at 09:30. Left Lisbon at 10:55 and arrived Boston 13:20.

In May, I have booked flights on United: A direct flight from Newark (EWR) to Lisbon (~7 hr); return Porto to Frankfurt to Newark (~11 hr total).

We are on the May 6 Portugal tour. We usually spend time after a tour in or near the final tour stop. We found the best price/schedule by flying round trip to Lisbon. It looks simple to catch the train to Lisbon from Porto. We will then go to the Lisbon airport to rent a car. After spending a few days in Southern Portugal (Lagos etc.) we can then just return to Lisbon airport, drop the car and catch the flight home.

We also did Bos-Lisbon and Porto-Lisbon-Boston on TAP when we did the tour in September 2016. It is an easy subway ride from Porto to the Porto airport (was much bigger than I expected).

Most of the tour took the train from Porto back to Lisbon and their total travel times were much longer than ours.
