Our family of 6 is traveling to the Algarve in July/August for 10 days, flying in and out of Faro. We have a week booked at a home just outside of Salema, and now have 3 more nights we need to book. We're renting a car, and I was thinking we'd explore another side of the Algarve the last three days--even considering the "country," but am concerned about the heat (we have a toddler) further away from the coast. Any suggestions on what area to spend our last 3 nights?

Finding accommodation for 6 people for only 3 nights isn't going to be that easy for that time of year. Many places were booked up months ago.
Stay near the coast, as it can get ferociously hot inland. It's very hot on the coast at present. I would suggest looking at Tavira, although this will be less breezy than the western Algarve. Alternatively, head up the west coast to somewhere such as Aljezur or Vila Nova de Milfontes. Great beaches up here. Don't go too far up, as you don't want to end up too far from the airport.

Jennifer is absolutely right. With kids, you should avoid the inland. Alentejo is an amazing place but to tell you the truth not even we take to many chances that time of year. Places like Arrifana or Aljezur, Vila Nova de Milfontes (really nice place) and Porto Covo are good choices.
