My husband and I are thinking of using either Braga or Guimaraes as our base in Northern Portugal in May 2026. We’d love recommendations for a bed & breakfast or small family run inn or hotel in either Braga or Guimaraes that our fellow Rick Steves travelers have enjoyed. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
I was probably 25 years ago, but we stayed (with a rental car) at the Pousada Mosteiro de Guimarães. This might be fancier than many RS fans would prefer, but we'd call it (like Rick) "a worthwhile splurge." It's a gut renovation of a monastery, or something like that. I remember that the cablecar trip to the higher parklands was a short walk away; However, Google Maps says the telepherique is closed. Back then, the parklands filled with locals out for the day was a "Rick Steves Moment."
We found that driving distances in Portugal are farther/longer apart than they may seem. I mention that because you said "base". I would not make a daytrip to Santiago de Compostella from Guimares. (I had hoped to do exactly that, but put it off to a later, Spain trip. And then, it wasn't as convenient to fly home to the US from Santiago as I had hoped. Had to change terminals in Heathrow.)
In 2021, I stayed at the Burgus Tribute and Design Hotel in Braga. I enjoyed my stay. It’s in a great location, close to the Cathedral and good restaurants. I didn’t have a car, so I don’t know about parking,
