I am watching Portugal's Heartland. Rick just referred to Pope Francis. WRONG! He was Pope Francis.
"Portugal's Heartland" was filmed in 2018. Francis was the Pope at that time. Rick could not see into the future.
As I understand it, the first time a Pope uses a new name, neither he NOR anyone else cannot use I since he (nor anyone else) has no way of knowing if any who follow him will use the same name. For what it's worth (about what you are paying for it), Peter is generally considered the first Pope and since no one has used that name since, he is not Peter I.
Rick just referred to Pope Francis
He was Pope Francis
Those are literally the same words.
Rick just referred to Pope Francis. WRONG! He was Pope Francis.
I am glad we, you and Rick all agree that Pope Francis was indeed Pope Francis. So that’s all good..
So should the vast library of Rick Steves PBS shows be edited to reflect current events?
I do not understand the post. . . This is a first time poster.
@jules, As I read it (after much head scratching) the OP is saying that Pope Francis deceased last year, so the video should say 'the former (or late) Pope Francis."
The poster may not be aware that (s) he was watching an old video.
I think the OP forgot to type "the first" in his original post. Rick refers to "Pope Francis the First" in Portugal's Heartland. OP's point is that Pope Francis was (and still is) the only pope called Francis and, therefore, should not be referred to as "the first" (or Pope Francis I) but simply as "Pope Francis."
At least I think that's what the OP means!
I think the OP forgot to type "the first" in his original post.
Yes, I think you are correct and the OP made a mistake in their first post just like Rick made a mistake calling the pope ”Francis the first”.
It just proves, ”To err is human …”.
I am sure that Pope Francis would have forgiven both the OP and Rick for their errors.
Yep, but at the time this program was filmed he was alive. I’m not understanding what you’re trying to get across here….
This is one of the more bewildering posts I've seen here. Apparently Pope Francis was Post Francis?
