I am thinking with a family of four (two teenage boys) that VRBO might be the way to go rather than two hotel rooms? I think Lisbon and Port (4-5 nights each) VRBO is best but I am SUPER open to different ideas and suggestions! Renting car and stopping at Obidos, Coimbra and Tomar on the way from Lisbon to Porto. I have searched relentless online....

Look at Star affiliated pousadas.pt for great stays. Often have good deals.
In Lisbon look at visitingportugal dot com for nice rentals owned by US ex-pats.

last 2 visits to Lisbon and Porto(latest 9/30-10/15/17) used Airbnb exclusively. For our last trip we looked at apartments for 4 however, the folks we were going with didn't make up their minds' in time so booked 2 doubles in both Lisbon and Porto. In '16 we did doubles all the way and were quite pleased.
