We've been to the castle but would just like to be in the outside area and gardens. We don't want to hike up the path to the entrance. Can we access it more on the northerly edge for free? I think I recall it being open around where the Smog statue is located.

When i was at wawel, there are 2 main entrances and you have to go there. I entered for free - you need to check the information on the castle's website https://wawel.krakow.pl/godziny-bilety-kasy-rezerwacje-bagaz. I recommend you to go on a cruise on the Vistula River after visiting the Wawel castle. I bought a ticket here https://www.e-statek.pl/ very nice views - they have a very nice audioguide. It is not possible to enter Wawel from the side of the dragon ;/

The area around the dragon is lower than the castle. If you want to go up into the center of the castle area, I don’t think anyone checked tickets unless you were entering a building. But I don’t think there’s a way in that doesn’t go up the hill.
