Visiting Auschwitz

Question,
In October 2026 I will be traveling from the US to Europe for a vacation. I would like my 1st stop to be a visit to Auschwitz. To what city in Poland / Germany should be fly into for the most direct route to this memorial?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill: I do not believe there are any direct flights from the US to Krakow, which is the closest location. The name of the airport is: Krakow John Paul II - Balice (KRK).

You want to fly into Krakow - Auschwitz is 60 - 90 minutes away by car, bus or train. You are starting from St Louis? You should be able to get connecting flights to Krakow via the major European hubs serviced by Lufthansa/United/Star Alliance, Delta/SkyTeam or American/OneWorld. When I visited Poland last April, I flew into Gdansk and out of Krakow on KLM via connections in Amsterdam, starting from Los Angeles - very easy.

I just did this from Seattle via Lufthansa going through Munich to Krakow. Its super easy. Stay in Krakow. Plan a day at Auschwitz, make a reservation for a tour as soon as you know your date, try to do the 6 hour study tour, my guide was an American expat who was fantastic. The train is very easy to Oswiecim, either SKA-2 or SKA-3 lines (two different routes that both terminate at Oswiecim), trains are very nice and the trip is very inexpensive. The walk from the station is a little over a mile to the visitor center and a very nice pleasant walk. Consider doing the Wieliczka Salt Mine while you are in Krakow, a massive 700 year old salt mine that is 500 feet deep with a Chapel, lake, restaurant, etc all at the bottom of the old mine.
