travel to krakow from vienna

Has anyone taken the train from Vienna to Krakow? Who owns the railway, and how was your journey? We will be in western Europe for a month, but want to see Auschwitz before we come back to the USA.

It's about 7 hours from Vienna to Krakow, check oebb.at for schedules and fares. Krakow is about an hour from Auschwitz-Birkenau by bus.

Mauthausen Memorial is just outside of Linz, by the way.

You can also look at
http://rozklad-pkp.pl/
choose English version and write Wien and Kraków Główny (main station).
There are trains from the station called Wien Meidling. Some of them are direct (e.g. TLK 402) or with one change in Katowice (also not far away from Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum) and there are more possibilities with many changes. So you can choose one direct train to Kraków (TLK 402, about 7 hours) or one direct train to Katowice (EIC 105 SOBIESKI, nearly 5 hours) - also from Wien Meidling station. As you can see on the map Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim is between Kraków and Katowice.
The website http://rozklad-pkp.pl/ is very useful for Poland in general and international trains, not only Polish.
Greetings,
Michal

We took the night train (other direction but still same info) and booked a couchette. We just booked it looking at the DB train schedule. We caught a bus to Auschwitz as the train station was too far away from the museum to walk. The bus was overcrowded but cheap.
