In January I will be heading to Poland for a long weekend visiting Póznan, Krakow and Warsaw, does anybody have any suggestions of things to see/do/places to eat? The salt mines near Krakow are definitely on my list. Thanks!
My suggestion is to pick one, if you only have a long (4 days?) weekend.
Krakow is beautiful and was not bombed in WWII like so many other cities and towns.
The salt mines did not interest us but Auschwitz did and our hotel arranged for us to go on a guided English language tour there. Sobering but worthwhile to visit.
We enjoyed our stay at the Amber Design Hotel.
The staff were so helpful.
For me, the salt mines were not worth the time it takes to get there, and you're spending that all inside a hole in the ground. That would be almost a whole day in itself. But really with only four days, much of your time will get eaten up just getting one place to another. I'd pick one city. Look at the website In Your Pocket, for Krakow and Warsaw and you'll have a lot of good info on what to do. Or get the Rick Steves City guide for Gdansk, Warsaw and Krakow, and it gives an abbreviated version of things.
I wasn’t that enthralled with the salt mines either, but Auschwitz was very worthwhile. I would spend the whole time in Krakow. It is one of my favorite cities, and there is a ton to do. I can’t imagine going to three cities on a long weekend - too much time in transit and not enough time to do each place justice.
Just stick with Krakow and visit the Salt mines, I found them impressive. You don't have time to also visit Póznan and Warsaw
If you're excited about the salt mines --> Woo-hoo! Go to the salt mines! Don't let people talk you out of something that really appeals to you. We all have our special interests.
Another vote for the salt mines! I've been three times, so clearly I'm a fan. If you want to go, then go! But I will agree with the others on here that you should just pick one city if all you have is 3-4 days. Krakow has enough to keep you busy.
I was in Krakow last month and ate twice at La Grande Mamma, an Italian restaurant right on the Main Square. The first night I ate outside with gorgeous weather; the second night was rainy so I ate inside. The restaurant is cozy and the food was great. It was the most expensive meal I had. I ordered a chicken pasta dish, a Coke and a 450ml of water and paid a whopping $17. I finally got into the Czartoryski Museum which was nice and has a very accessible audio guide. I have to be honest, I wasn't super impressed with the Schindler Museum, but that could just be me (it was crowded, and there was a LOT of text but also not as much information as I would have expected - if that makes since? But I'm also a historian by trade so maybe I'm judging it too harshly).
Have a great trip!
Krakow and Auschwitz-Birkenau are the must-sees in this country. I’ve been twice and would go again. The old town and Jewish quarter are not to be missed. Rick Steves self-guided walks in Krakow are good.
The first time I went to Auschwitz I took an in-depth three-hour tour and after the first hour I didn’t want to listen anymore, it was hard to take in another dreadful story but I highly recommend taking the tour, it changes you.
I also visited the salt mines and was disappointed. The only highlight was the church and after that I was ready to leave. It wasn’t worth the hassle it took to get there and back either.
I spent a day in Poznan and didn’t like it. This city was heavily bombed during WWII and the old town was destroyed. They rebuilt it but it’s too new to be called an “old town”. There’s not much to it either.
Another vote for only Krakow. Stay at an apartment near the train/bus station. Take a day trip to Zakopane, Auschwitz, and spend the rest of the time enjoying the lovely city. Visit Schindler's Museum. I'll send you some info privately.
