Schindler Factory visit

We will be experiencing a lot of Jewish history when we start our trip next week in Prague (5 days)and then onto to Krakow(4 days including Auschwitz). We will have visited Auschwitz/Birkenwald/Salt Mine our second day staying in Krakow. We have previously visited Dachau, and will see the Jewish History sites in Prague.

To visit the Schindler Factory we would have to move a number of things on our itinerary and wonder whether this site is an absolute must visit, given our other extensive dive into Jewish history and specifically the WWiI period. Does the Schindler site present a particularly unique.

I would look into doing a walking tour in the Jewish quarter of Krakow, that would include the site of the Ghetto. This was immensely interesting to me, far more than going to the factory. I would have never heard of the Pharmacist in the Ghetto, or seen the 7 Synagogues in the Jewish quarter. Considering the population was once 25% Jewish, this is an intense tour, but fascinating.

I visited the Schindler factory and my opinion was that I saw the same information presented elsewhere. It’s mostly a world war 2 museum with some information about Schindler thrown in.

The Schindler Factory museum helped me to better understand the German occupation of Poland prior to the Jewish people being sent to the concentration camps. It was a part of history I wasn’t as familiar with, and I’m glad I went. We hear a lot about the concentration camps, but not so much about the lead up and occupation (at least in my case). That being said, it’s a heavy topic and you’ll certainly be covering a lot of similar topics, so it’s really a personal choice for you. Obviously there’s a lot of WW2 history in that part of the world, and it’s definitely possible to get a bit overloaded.

And yes, as someone else said, it’s not really about Schindler, or the movie. Some people seemed disappointed by that when we went, so it should be mentioned.

Please let us know your review of Danchu and Auschwitz. How long had you spent at Danchu and Auschwitz?

@brigitte07,

I spent about 4-5 hrs in Dachau, not including travel from a Munich suburb. I don't remember how long it took, probably 1 hour each way.

I am yet to visit Auschwitz, but will plan to spend at least 4-5 hours in Auschwitz + 3-4 hours round trip travel from Krakow using a public bus/train. Budgeting an entire day for this as a day trip from Krakow.

I cannot say with certainty whether the museum is a “must see” as I was unable to secure tickets to the Schindler Factory in a visit earlier this month, However, based on the sites you will have visited by the end of your time in Krakow, I think it may not be vital that you rearrange your schedule solely to allow you to see the museum.

If you would like more history of the Jews in Krakow before, during, and after WW II, a comprehensive city tour with a good guide might be preferable. I was able to arrange a private tour for a group of eight with Rick Steves recommended guide Marta Chmielowska, and it was excellent. While Marta (and other good guides surely) will tailor an itinerary to suit your interests, our requested tour of sites she would recommend for someone visiting Krakow for the first time included a walk through the Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter of Krakow, including the Remah cemetery, a Jewish bookstore, synagogue, and sites that appear in Schindler‘s List; the ghetto, including the empty chairs exhibit in Ghetto Heroes Square, and the Eagle Pharmacy Museum, which someone mentioned previously (very small, well worth stopping in for as long as your time will allow). This portion of our full-day tour took less three hours, I think.

Does anyone have the email for Marta, one of the guides that rick recommends in his book? I tried the email listed in the Rick Steves book and it would not go through. The book says that it is: [email protected] Thank you.
