I thought Wolf's Lair was super cool, but I have immense interest in WWII history. Nearby is the Mamerki/Mauerwald Bunkers, the headquarters for the OKH, the German ground forces during WWII. The bunkers at Wolf's Lair were blown up (though significant remains are still present); the bunkers at Mamerki are largely intact.

A number of companies offer private, round-trip day trips to Wolf's Lair from Gdansk, but it's a 3 - 3.5 hour drive each way. A friend and I were trying to see Wolf's Lair between Gdansk and Warsaw. Here is how we structured this using Poland Travel to make the plan happen:

• On Day 1, we had a driver take us from Gdansk to Malbork Castle. After around 3-4 hours there, we continued our travel. The next stop was Schloss Finckenstein, a former Prussian manor that served as Napoleon's headquarters for 2-3 months in 1807 as he passed through this area of the world. It is in ruins because Soviet troops burned it down as they passed through the area during WWII. The owner met us at the property and allowed us to explore the ruins. I slipped him the equivalent of $50 as a gesture of thanks. We then drove on to Olsztyn (formerly Allenstein before the end of WWII), which is a very nice small city/large town which we explored in the afternoon and evening and was where we spent the night at a nice new Hampton Inn.
• On Day 2, we were picked up around 8:30 am by a driver who drove from Warsaw and took us to Wolf's Lair and Mauerwald. Our drop off was in Warsaw instead of a return to Olsztyn. Here is the itinerary for the round trip tour from Olsztyn.

This worked great for us. And we loved all that we saw.

We are going in September and booked a day trip with Poland at War, owned by Damien Stewart. He was very helpful and accommodating, but I’ll let you know how it goes after we’re there.
