Poland road travel in late September to early October

My husband and I. Active independent seniors. We would like to do a circle tour of Poland. Either train or car rental. Travelling light. Appreciate your comments.

Avoid large cities driving. Perhaps stay outside and go in by local transit.
Suggested itineraries would be appreciated.

Accommodation availability that time of year to have flexibility and not have to book too far in advance.

Interests are history and seeing out of the way non touristy areas. Also main sites as well.

Thank you

astodd, not any responses. My two cents: I've been told that the less-visited east of Poland is more interesting. I've not been to any of these places to the east , but they've all piqued my interests for the next time: The Bialowiesza forest (a large nature preserve with the last remaining wild European bison); Zamósc and Prszemyl (apologies for spellings); the Bieszcadzy mountains in the southeast corner. Noting that there are other Holocaust sites to see besides Auschwitz. Towns I have seen and are worth a stop are Sandomierz and Kazimierz Dolny, and the shrine at Czestochowa.

Kraków is of course worth spending a lot of time in. Wawel castle and old main market square are beautiful and historic.
