Krakow hotel for solo female traveler in September

I arrive at Krakow airport on a Saturday evening and depart early Wednesday morning. I usually book hotels closer to the main train station so I can easily hop on a train. I'll be traveling with a backpack and carry-on luggage. I'm a female in my late 40s.
How safe is the area around the train station? I'll spend 2 days sightseeing in Krakow. I walk a lot but also planning to use the tram. And 1 full day at Auschwitz (doing it on my own and getting tickets directly from the museum. May take the train or bus depending on schedule).

I was initially looking at hotels in Old Town inside the circle but towards the northern part. But that would still be a 20 minute walk I imagine to the station. So wondering if a hotel closer to the station might be my best option. I prefer a hotel away from noise, I'm not a night owl and will probably walk all day, have early dinner and go to bed. I'm not in the party scene.

I'm hoping for a room not too small and up to $180 Euros (including breakfast/cancelation option). So far these are the hotels that meet my criteria:
North part of Old Town: H12; Unicus Old Town (not Palace); Garamond.
Near train station: TRIBE, PURO Krakow Stare Miasto

Any insight on area or these hotels? Thank you.

Tribe was fantastic- literally thru the mall from the train and across the road.. There are good cafes and restaurants 5-10 mins walk and the area is well lit etc, because it is so close th the station. I went to Auschwitz with a small tour group and was picked up at the hotel at 8.00 am. And dropped back about 3.00. Do go to Nowa Huta and see the wonderful Arka Pana church. I could have touristed in Krakow for at least a week- was 5 days and I think about it often (there in late sept)

Thank you Jennie. Glad to hear it! Which type of room did you have? I read some reviews that a rooms are very small.
Is City View worth the extra price?

Not a solo female…but our stay some time ago at the Hotel Wielopole was one of the best ever. Great location for walking to major sights, safe area, comfortable if slightly old fashioned room, immaculate bathroom. The staff were as helpful and friendly as any we’ve encountered in many years of years of travel. Breakfast now appears an additional charge but when we visited it was a huge buffet. It may be. a bit beyond your price range but eliminating breakfast and grabbing a bialy from nearby vendors may suffice. The ratings on Booking are about as high as possible. You may consider it. Also…we intended to purchase a tour to Auschwitz but were overwhelmed by the various choices ( we had no interest in arranging bus, train , tickets on our own) and folks at the desk offered to arrange a mini bus tour, door to door…well worth the money spent, convenient and easy. Safe travels. Also a once in forever experience …when we checked in the clerk told us the room rate had declined since we reserved and gave us the the reduced rate. Happily appreciated.

Joy, we had the twin room. it looked across to the mall where the station and I think it was 4th floor. Didn't feel like we needed a view but the outlook was pleasant. They routinely dont put singles or pairs on a floor with tour groups. Tribe staff were excellent and advised us about Salt mine visit. We had advance booked the tour to Auschwitz.

Hi, I’m a solo female traveler & stayed at Hotel Europejski which is right across the street from Krakow Glowny. Not in front of the station but on the left as you exit the station.
It’s an old European style hotel. Room was adequate for me. It lacked AC in the summer which was tough but if you’re going in cooler weather that wouldn’t be an issue. Breakfast was a nice sized buffet w many options from what I remember. The bus terminal for a bus to Auschwitz is behind Krakow Glowny.
I ate dinner one night at a restaurant a few blocks down the street. Had a chicken Cesar salad.

It was also convenient being across from the huge mall. At night I went over there to shop. Or you could eat there too—plenty of options.
Everything felt safe to me but I am very careful & don’t let my guard down anywhere especially around crowded stations & malls.

Thank you. AC is a must for me but good to know of options and the general area there. .
I really enjoy staying closer to main train station when the area is safe to do so. Always fun to visit a supermarket at a different country, grab some snacks and drinks for day trips and late night munchies.
I plan to familiarize myself with the train and bus departure for Auschwitz at the station ahead of time. I'm dedicating a full day for Auschwitz and probably won't have enough time to visit salt mines. I only have 2 days in Krakow and so much to see! Definitely doing a walking tour of Kazimierz.

I went to Krakow in 2022 and stayed at the Ventus Rosa Boutique Aparthotel when traveling solo. It was in a central location and just a nice place. I had a little balcony over a courtyard. I'd definitely stay there again.

I broke my toe two weeks before my trip to Central Europe last year so I brought a foldable luggage roller for my large backpack. The sidewalks from the train station to Old Town were smooth and easy for rolling my backpack to our apartment lodging, located near St. Mary's Basilica and the main market square, where my family and I were staying. There are some cobblestones in the Old Town but if the wheels on your suitcase are in good shape, you won't have any trouble going over them. My family and I really loved sleeping next to the square since there's so much to see and getting up early and walking into the main market square with only a few people about in the morning was magical! It was nice to walk around the square after dark too to see the buildings lit up. Surprising, since there are quite a few people walking about. The square's restaurants and outdoor eating areas are crowded with late night diners so you feel quite safe. It really is beautiful to view the churches and Old Town areas at night. If you are walking outside the main square at night, like through the park or along quiet streets on the outside of the historical area, then I might feel nervous or unsafe. Overall though, the people are so friendly and helpful. I have never seen so many families with young children on my travels as I saw in Krakow...and parents took them out late in the evening especially on the weekend nights. I think you might miss out on the historical beauty if you do not stay in the Old Town. I felt it was more modern and actually crowded near the train station since to exit the train station, you walk through a very modern mall. Rick Steves never seems to go wrong with his hotel recommendations and he lists quite a few for Krakow in his Central Europe book. You might want to look into them especially if you are arriving to Krakow and departing Krakow in daylight hours. But...there's always Uber.
On our trip to Krakow last year, we took the train from Krakow to Oswiecim to visit Auschwitz. From Oswiecim's train station, we took the bus, which runs quite frequently, to Auschwitz I. The official Auschwitz web site is packed with information and detailed instructions on how to travel by various methods to Auschwitz I and even provides the bus schedule from Oswiecim's train station. For our return trip back to Krakow, we took the bus from Birkenau to Auschwitz I, transferred to another bus which then took us back to the train station for our train trip back to Krakow. Make certain to reserve your day/ time slot/ language for the tour at Auschwitz.
While in Krakow, we mostly walked and sometimes used the tram. To make the best use of our time since we only had a few days in Krakow, we took an Uber to the Divine Mercy Sanctuary and walked from there to the Sanctuary of St. John Paul II. Our Uber driver was a friendly, young college student and the cost was so cheap. We paid by cash. We also used Uber to get back to our apartment. Uber drivers are not allowed to drive in the Old Town so our driver took us to the closest street to our apartment in the Old Town.
You will have a wonderful trip no matter where you decide to stay. Krakow is so beautiful and full of history!

Iwannatravel Thanks for sharing your report here. I am glad you had such a great hotel that met your need and interests. Also, thank you again for sharing your experience attending mass at St. Mary's Basilica in the other thread.

I was initially looking at staying in Old Town near main square, but I do tend to prefer a room in a quieter area. After some research, I decided to be near train station. I also arrive late in the evening and depart early in the morning and will be taking the train from/to airport. It will be more practical for me. I'm also taking the 7am bus to Auschwitz so staying near the area will be logistically better. The big mall at the train station reminds me of Kyoto (I had also stayed really close to the train station there).
