Krakow Cloth Hall

The RS Snapshot book for Krakow describes the Cloth Hall as "selling mostly souvenirs, wood carvings, chess sets,...."

I am interested in buying a chess set. When dealing with the merchants in the CLoth Hall, is the price listed the real price or is there some haggling expected?

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive Poland is. I don't think haggling is expected - you can try it and you'll see by the reaction (I would only do it - if at all - if you're plannning on getting multiple items, not just one).

check out some of the shops rather than the stalls first, and you might find better products.

I cannot say from personal experience, but I would worry that some of the low-priced objects sold in the Cloth Hall may be made in a country other than Poland.

I can't post a picture on this newsboard, but I was startled (in 2018) to find in the Cloth Hall, a shelf of 6"-10" wooden (?) figurines showing orthodox Jews, one of them actually holding a money bag. You can't make this stuff up.

They will have locally carved sets there, you just have to look carefully, and use your judgment.

Cloth Hall prices might be tourist prices. If you walk away from the town center and around side streets you might find better prices and more choices. Krakow is a lovely city and we did very well there in terms of food and shopping and getting around.
