Hey folks. We land in Krakow on Sat Sept 8, plan to stay there for at least four nights. So we prefer to do apartment-style or AirBnB. Any thoughts? Particulars if you have them, general guidance if you don't. We are new to Krakow and from our research it looks like Old Town or Kazmierz would be our best bets? Love to be near good restaurants, but a little worried about noise from roaming bands of partiers in Kazmierz? Hoping to stay under Eu 100 per night.
I stayed in a hotel so I can't help you with a BnB. We did visit Kazmierz, a couple times, in fact. We enjoyed wandering around and went into the old synagogue, visited the cemeteries and many of the churches. The RS guide had a walking tour we found helpful. I thought the ethnographic museum was very worth while. There are a number of good restaurants. We went to Hamas for dinner and then I returned the next day for lunch.
As much as I liked the Kazmierz area, we stayed on the edge of the old town and it worked well for us. I recall our room was just under 100 euro and included breakfast. We stayed at Hotel Wielopole. It was handy to the train station, old town and public transportation.
I don't recall Kazmierz being a big party area, but we weren't there at night. I travel with ear plugs for sleep so I don't worry about street noise too much.
If you do a search, there are several trip reports and posts for Poland and Krakow.
Oooh, thank you Jules. I have used this forum for years and I still never think about the trip reports forum. I also see some good info in the reviews forum. I love an independent hotel for shorter stays, but prefer more space for longer than 3 nights. That way I know I can always reheat my leftovers or do a load of laundry!
I also stayed in hotels for my 2 stays, so can’t be helpful there. However I stayed a week at the Klezmer Hois and loved it. I only mention this for the area reference: I was there the last week of September and noice was never a problem.
TexasTravelMom, thank you. Klezmer Hois made me perk up--did you attend any klezmer performances? This is definitely on my list, we love klezmer. Their prices are very good, maybe I don't need laundry...(I know I don't need to stay there to hear klezmer!)
Thanks for asking this question because I’ll be there for 5 nights in early October and I’m looking for an apartment where I can do laundry. I’m looking forward to seeing any suggestions you get and I’m happy for the reminders of looking at Trip Reports and Reviews for ideas.
I also like to stay in apts for anything more than 3 nights. I stayed in these apartments in Krakow and I loved it. Couldn't be any more convenient, in old town right around the corner from the main square. They have a couple of locations and I stayed in #4 Grodzka. It was a lovely studio apartment (I was a solo) with some exposed brick, a nice kitchenette, a queen sized bed and a great shower. and best of all the price was very reasonable. Granted that it was almost 10 years ago that I stayed there but they're still on booking.com and get a very good review rating (8.5 with almost 1200 reviews). I would definitely book them again if I get back to Krakow. Looks like their rates start at around €110 but I guess it would depend on what time of year.
It was a while ago, but we stayed at the Hotel Columbus which was kind of between the Old Town, and Kazimierz. Decent enough hotel although a tram line ran on the street so quieter rooms would be in back.
Nearby was Szeroka Street (really a square) that was full of restaurants, including the one with live klezmer that Rick once featured on his program. The square also has a synagogue on one end that was used in scenes of Schindler's List.
I have been to the klezmer concert at the Klezmer Hois twice: once when I stayed there and then again when I had a group in Krakow and we stayed elsewhere and just had reservations for dinner and 1 hour concert. It is in a small dining room, with 3 excellent musicians, and very cozy.
It is such a unique place: half hotel and half Jewish literature publishing house. There are stacks of books everywhere you look on the ground floor. No elevator with grand staircases. I was on the top floor (2 flights, I think) in what felt to me like the Jewish grandma suite - living room and bedroom with private bathroom across the hall, and no one else in my little section. Breakfast for just me would have fed 4 people and I could NOT persuade the girls to give me less. It is one of my favorite stays ever. But I know not everyone would like it….. I didn’t need laundry, so can’t help with that. :)
On our first trip, we stayed at Hotel Columbus, which was very nice, but have since booked apartments on Basztowa right by the Planty, not far from the train/bus station. One is Krakow Downtown Apartments, and the other is Terminal Apartments. Both can be found on Booking.com. They were less than $75 a day and easy to access, a short walk to town, restaurants, a bakery next door, etc.
