Is Sierpc Open-Air Museum worth prioritzing?

I am curious to hear opinions regarding Sierpc Open-Air Museum. Is it worth prioritizing a visit?

Currently we are planning to take a train from Warsaw-Torun (no Sierpc) and exploring Torun for 1 afternoon/evening. So, we'd be giving up time in Torun to stop in Sierpc. And trading an easy train ride for a necessary rental car (no easy access to Sierpc by train or bus that I can find).

Our dates are firm because we fly home from Gdansk a couple days after that. And we definitely want to prioritize a stop at Malbork Castle.

While I am trying to avoid the curse of over-stuffing an itinerary, we are also suckers for open-air museums and maybe this one is worth it ...???

We made the mistake of visiting the open-air museum in Tallinn and that was not worth it, so there's that.

Hmmm ... what to do, what to do. Any suggestions?

Dziękuję!

We went there on the RS Poland tour and it was very meaningful for me because I had done some genealogy research and realized that my grandmother was from that area. (A small town about 20 minutes away). She emigrated from Poland to the US as a child with her parents and siblings around the turn of the century. It was really moving and interesting to see how she would have lived as a young girl. The grounds and buildings are nicely preserved and we had a farm type lunch there. With that being said, without that personal connection, I’m not sure I would recommend going out of your way and renting a car just to go there. Good luck with your decision! I loved Poland!

Thank you so much for sharing this perspective, @saf. First, how very cool that you had the opportunity to get a glimpse into the life of your grandmother when she was growing up in the Polish countryside. What a gift. Second, thank you for taking the time to describe the museum and your experience there. Third, I share your enthusiasm for Poland and we are really looking forward to our trip. We've been once before to visit Auschwitz and sightsee around Krawkow. This time we're checking out Wroclaw, Warsaw, Torun, and Gdansk. I'd love to think there will be another trip to Poland in our future and it sounds as if a visit to the museum in Sierpc would be something for that itinerary. Thanks, again!

We went to the Sierpc Museum in September, so my advice is pretty up to date. Except for the Sanok skansen in SE Poland (been there twice), the one is Sierpc is top notch. Our trip was a bit different than the one you suggested. We took a bus from Warsaw to Plock- very easy and just an efficient two-hour trip. We stayed at the Green Hotel right at the station. So nice and never heard a train.

We arranged for a BOLT driver to take us there, and he told us he would come back for us when we called. He gave us his phone number. It worked out great. He really liked us because we showed him how to use AI for a fluid Polish-English transation on his phone. He was a nice Polish guy. You will love Poland because MOST of the Uber/Bolt drivers are Polish people. It's not that way in much of Europe. We took a BOLT from Rzeszow to Sanok and had a splendid conversation using the translation app with the driver. I learned so much about Poland through him.

Before we left, we arranged for a guided tour in English through the skansen. Here's the receipt.

We've been to five skansens in Poland, and the one in Sierpc is very good. There is a train that goes to a town near Sierpc but it was too complicated, and we didn't want to do the walk from the town to the skansen.

I wrote a book called Poland at Your Pace, when I returned from Poland (this was my sixth trip.) We do things independently and usually take buses, trains and trams to get around. I don't speak Polish, but this has never been a problem. If you have Polish ancestry, you might like the book "Our Polish Ancestors."
