is it worth travelling to Krakow for 2 or 3 nights? What if one day is Corpus Cristi?

We are a family of 4 with two teenagers going to munich for 8 night trip, but thinking of spliting it up by spending 5 nights in munich and then flying to Krakow for 3 nights and flying out from there. Is that trying to fit too much in. We are Arriving Munich Jun 13 and would leave Krakow June 21. We were thinking of coming to Krakow June 18. It looks like that is Corpus Cristi is June 19th so I would guess everything would be closed. Would it be worth going just to see the city and then go to the salt mines on June 20? Thanks for your help.

  • 19 Hire a tour guide for half a day.

That's a lot of moving around for such a short trip, but it's definitely doable. Not sure why you want to take up time seeing the salt mine when there is so much more to see in Krakow (Kazimierz, the Schindler Factory Museum, the castle, etc). If you stay in an apartment rather than a hotel and have food on hand, I think it would be very cool to check out the Corpus Cristi processions. I believe you are correct that businesses will be closed and hotels not staffed.
Also, there are very few flights to the US from Krakow, so you might need to return to Munich or head to Warsaw to get home. Unless you don't mind connecting.
I don't agree with Mr. E that you need to pay $300 each to fly between Krakow and Munich. Use Skyscanner to find a better price.
OTOH, there is definitely a week's worth of things to see and do in/around Munich, and you might end up doing both cities short shrift with your itinerary.

G3rryCee; I don’t just make this stuff up; I looked for the date in question. I wouldnt be much help any other way. Here are the non-stops Munich to Krakow on 18 June:

  • The 07:30 flight is 352 euro with a checked bag and a seat
  • The 11:20 flight is 289 euro with a checked bag and a seat
  • The 14:40 flight is 308 euro with a checked bag and a seat
  • The 22:10 flight is 204 euro (Yeaaa!!!) and arrives at 23:30 (Boooo!) with a checked bag and a seat

You can do better with Economy Light (no checked bag and you pay for your seat reservation; and you can do better if you add a connection or two and that might get it to between $200 and $300 with a checked bag and seat. For instance Eurowings with one 55 minute change is 188 euro ($215) with a bag and a seat and only a 4 hour flight. Dont forget the taxi to and from the airports; maybe a total of $70 to $80 for a van for four (wild guess).

But I might have missed something.

BUT, you cant always make logical cost decisions when you are doing a holiday. Its all about the experience and the enjoyment and sometimes that cost $300 a ticket ... so be it. I am sitting here planning a shorter trip with transportation costs twice what we disussed here. But its what I want to do ... so I pay for it

I stand corrected by Mr. E. Those prices are terrible. Skip Krakow this time. Go somewhere else in Germany (or Salzburg, which I saw in another post) by train instead.

G3rryCee

I miss stuff all the time.

I was looking at going to Krakow for a few days in June. I would be flying from Vienna and returning to Budapest. I was finding prices around $250 round trip with Wizz / Ryan / LOT (with the bag and a seat). Times 2 plus another $70 for the taxi = $570 ($285 a person).

So I got curious and checked the rate with DayTrip.com. About $750 including a stop in Olomouc on the way there from Vienna and a stop in Banska Stiavnica on the way back to Budapest. Well there are two of us traveling. So, $750/2=$375 a person which isn’t much different than flying and you get picked up at your front door (no taxi cost) and get to stop for 90 minutes for lunch in an interesting place along the way. With the stops its 7 hours more or less, each way. The flights would be maybe 5 hours door to door and you don’t see anything along the way

But alas, Munich is too far for the same idea.
