Gdansk Westerplatte

Will be in Gdańsk for two days before RS tour begins. Would like others’ thoughts on visiting Westerplatte. Was it worthwhile? It sounds like taking water taxi is the way to get there. We will be seeing the WW 2 Museum as well

Although the battle of Westerplatte has been all but forgotten in anglo-american historiography, its certainly worth a visit today to see where World War II began, there is also a small museum on site in the remains of the Polish fortifications, which helps build context to the battle.

We visited Westerplatte this spring. It's about 10 km north of the the old town on the Baltic shore. If the weather is good and/or on a weekend, it will be crowded. We recommend the European Solidarity Center, a new museum on the site of the Lenin Shipyard, where Solidarity Movement began. We were not aware of water taxi being available. Bus takes about 50 minutes.

"...all but forgotten in Anglo-American historiography...." How true. At Westerplatte is a very moving and poignant memorial.

Seeing Westerplatte was my top reason for visiting Gdansk—long day trip by train from Warsaw, explored the old town and scoped out where to have lunch, then did the boat ride—sort of a schooner, really. A bit over an hour meandering around the vast shipyards and you could get off at Westerplatte and return to Gdansk on the next boat or just view from the boat. The WWII museum wasn’t open yet but I really enjoyed the Solidarity museum.
