Excellent guide in Gdansk and Tri-City area

Recently my husband and I travelled to Poland (my family home) and took along Rick Steves guidebook for Krakow, Warsaw and Gdansk. We used it extensively and found it very helpful. One of the best recommendations in the book was to hire Jacek Podhorski as a private guide in Gdansk. Jacek (Jake) is terrific, He is knowledgeable, extremely pleasant and full of interesting stories and facts as he takes you around. He speaks excellent English and is generous with his time, his knowledge and freely shares his love of history, economics and life in Poland. We took a special tour with him of Stutthof concentration camp and were very grateful for his guidance and empathy as he taught us about this tragic period of history and this WWII labor camp turned concentration camp outside of Gdansk.

Jacek took us around in his comfortable, immaculate car and was extremely interesting to talk with throughout the day. He went out of his way to be sure we had everything we needed, including taking over 100 pictures on his phone for me when my battery died. He is a certified guide in several museums and has a wide range of knowledge.

Jacek showed us many aspects of life in the city and the surrounding areas, and shared with us many details about the Solidarity movement and post war Poland. He made our trip a great deal more meaningful than we could ever have done on our own. We learned a great deal from him and will definitely find him again when we return for another trip to the spectacular city of Gdansk.

We highly recommend his tours to anyone visiting the Gdansk and Tri-City area. He offers a wide range of tours of the 3 cities, museums and important sights outside of Gdansk.

I just started planning our Spring 2024 to Poland and I appreciate the recommendation. I'm thinking of spending six nights in Gdansk with a couple of day trips. This trip to Poland was originally planned for Spring 2020, but then Covid lockdown hit about 7 weeks before our departure.

During lockdown I delved into ancestry research that had been collecting dust for nearly 15 years and discovered that a great many of dad's ancestors came from Prussia, now northern Poland. I'd love to take a day trip to Leba (and possibly Charbrowo) where several were born and married. It's 3 hours by train, but half that amount by car so maybe Jacek might be helpful if I decide to go to Leba.

Thanks again for taking the time to post your recommendation!

Jacek (pronounced Yatzek) is a wonderful guide with a terrific sense of humor. He mentioned that he was on the faculty of Gdansk University and did his PhD. research on small vessel (so called "crypols") traffic in Gdansk Harbor. If you wish to eat well and avoid tourist traps he will take to the best restaurants in the area.
Great guy!
