Ease of travel: Kraków to Prague or Kraków to Budapest?

We are planning to fly to Europe in September from California (multi-city route) for 3 weeks. We plan to visit 4 major urban areas (Kraków, Prague, Vienna and Budapest) plus side trips to rural areas along the way. We (husband and me) are thinking we should start in Kraków or end in Kraków.
1. Does this make sense to experienced travelers?
2. Which route would you choose leaving or going to Kraków?

Thanks, any recommendations appreciated.

If it were me, I would fly into Krakow as that eliminates one difficult land route. I would go on to Prague because there is an interesting stop or two along the way to break up an otherwise long trip. Make it at least a 2 day journey (1 night) if not 3 days (2 nights). Then after Prague a night in Cesky Krumlov on the way to Vienna. End the trip in Budapest as I think it's the calmest place to gather your thoughts and memories prior to heading home.

I agree that flying is the better way to go, although flying into or out of Krakow usually requires a connection along the way...Warsaw usually if you fly LOT.
There's a modern and efficient express train connecting Krakow with Warsaw, which itself would be worth a day to explore the old town area which was rebuilt from the rubble after WW II.
From Warsaw there are several relatively cheap non-stop flights to both Budapest and Prague that would make for a short travel day. You might be able to add the one-way flight to your multi-city flight plan and save a few Zlotys.

As Robert points out, adding Warsaw will make it easier. Krakow is not well connected to anywhere else.

Krakow's been high on my list for several years and I even planned a trip a few months ago (which I've had to postpone), but in doing the research I found that I wanted to spend 3-4 days in Warsaw in addition to 3-4 days in Krakow. I think with 19 full days on the ground, you have time to include Warsaw. With the exception of Český Krumlov if you see it (between Prague and Vienna), your side trips will be day trips from your city stays.

Appreciate your input. It makes sense to go to Kraków first. Also, love the comment about Budapest being a good place to end our trip.
