Day trip to Salt Mines and Auschwitz

I am looking at a day trip from Krakow to

Auschwitz and the salt mines. Has any one done these as a combined tour. I saw one that is a long day but spends a few hours at each site. I am travelling on my own and am thinking a tour for these sites may be best. Has anyone done a tour they can recommend

Wendy: We visited both, but not on the same day. We did it as part of a tour group; so, I can't recommend any particular company for the tours. I would recommend against trying to do both in the same day--not only would it be a very long day, you would be spending much of the day traveling between Krakow and the two sites with limited time at the sites themselves. Krakow has sufficient interest to warrant staying multiple days to visit the highlights.

I did both last September but on separate days. I would not recommend trying to do both in one day. You more or less have to do Auschwitz on a tour. We did the Salt Mines on our own. You don't need a tour except maybe for transportation purposes. We took a bus across the street from the main train station which is part of a big mall now. We did have to walk 1/3 mile from the bus stop to the entrance. There are separate tours for English speaking etc. It was pretty fascinating.

I agree with previous opinions. There is not point in rushing and doing all these things in one day.
Make sure the visit includes both Auschwitz (I) and Auschwitz - Birkenau.

Thanks. I ended up having my hostel book tours for me on separate days.

The salt mines are just outside of Krakow in suburbs. There is an expressway that goes directly to the mines so they are really easy to reach. Just take a taxi to get there. I took an organized tour and felt like an idiot when I realized how close they were.
