Day/overnight trips

I am reworking my planned trip to Europe this fall and dropping Munich due to distance so I have found my self with extra time that I can add to Poland. I will be arriving from Vienna and leaving Poland for Budapest. Any suggestions for places to see outside Karkow and Warsaw. I am thinking three days in each of these cities. I am planning on trips to Auschwitz and the salt mines. So I have two maybe three days to fill. I love history, art and culture. I will be using public transport. This will be in the second week of June.

Thanks

I would highly recommend Gdańsk or Wrocław - both easily accessible by train. If you would enjoy mountain break instead, then you can head to Zakopane in the Carpathian mountains (distinct rural Polish culture) which is close to and easy to get to from Krakow. Częstochowa is another option - it's a very important pilgrimage site for the Poles. There are lots of other places that are lovely and off the tourist radar - I would take a look at a Poland travel book if you need more ideas (it's a big country so you have many, many options depending on your interests).
