C-PAP and LOT Airlines - also TSA w/LOT from US airports

Hi everyone!!!

Most airlines don't count a C-PAP as a "carryon". It seems LOT airlines does consider it a carryon and you're only entitled to one carryon. Can anyone confirm this or have experience with LOT airlines in this regard? I was planning to utilize a carryon and bring my CPAP as a medical device as I've done with all other airlines.

Also, I know LOT airlines does not recognize TSA but I'm leaving from Chicago and generally TSA looks for the TSA markings on the ticket. The LOT tickets don't have TSA on them....anyone have experience with this aspect when leaving from US airports? If so, how to handle....

Just checking to make sure so I know ahead of time and there are no surprises and the airport !!

Thanks !!!

Because LOT airlines does not participate in TSA Pre-Check, your ticket will not have a TSA marking and you will have to go through the regular security line.

Thanks, but LOT's terminology is fairly vague in terms of how "medical equipment" is defined on that page. It specifically mentions wheelchair and crutches. I did find on their website that you can bring a C-Pap machine on board with the passenger separate from your carryon, but you need to register the machine 72 hours in advance on a special form AND it must be used on board while you travel. LOT doesn't guarantee that electrical outlets will be available either. So, it seems medical equipment is OK on board if you file the proper form AND its needed with you during the flight.

Just an FYI, CPAPs are not treated as carry-ons by any US airline because to do so would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, non-US airlines may or may not have the same policy.

Is your C-PAP larger than the personal item that you're allowed in addition to your carry-on?

Are you flying non- stop Chicago to Warsaw? I would just check the bag.

Hey Marcw

The C-pap case is fairly small and light weight than a regulation carryon size. I was going to use the RS backpack as my carryon (I used it for the RS Italy tour) but I don't know if its sturdy enough to survive as luggage. I'm planning on checking in a different carryon (the typical hard case) at the LOT counter. I'd rather plan for the worst-case scenario than winging it at the gate. Less headaches!!!

I saw that but it also states, “ *If there are no concomitant medical conditions, a MEDIF form is not required for passengers using a CPAP device.”

I agree it is not explicitly stated whether or not they will count it separately from your carry-on.

Hey Laura

That's why I'm planning to check in my would-be-carryon at the airport and use c-pap as my carryon. If they allow me to bring both on as carryons then great!! However, LOT has a very strict weight limit for you carryon too.... I think it's about 17 lbs.!?!

My dad was Dr. Patrick Schmerin, so he was nicknamed, Pap Smear. Hilarious. Not.

What is forgotten is his groundbreaking work for tubing and filters for first version C-PAPs. We know a great basketball player, but not a man who actually contributed to saving countless lives. Here's to you. Dr. Smear.

I have flown LOT from Chicago to Warsaw twice and they did not weigh carryons. I did not notice anybody being hassled about their bags. The second trip I did carryon only so I had a standard 22" roller and an 18x12" rolling duffle for my personal item. The duffle is technically oversize but LOT did not hassle me about it. I think I was also wearing my crossbody bag, which would make a third item that some airlines would make you consolidate but not LOT.
