Hi travelers! Has anyone been to Białowieża? Would welcome any tips and recommendations, particularly recommendations for English speaking guides for the for the primeval protected area (my understanding is that a guide is required to enter this part of the forest). Thanks in advance!
Hi, I'd love to compare notes on this one. We are going the Bialowieza and biebrza in late September for birdwatching and I've had the worst time getting guides to call back.
Białowieża has been on my list of places to visit for some time, but I haven't made it there yet. I'm thinking of spending three weeks in Poland in 2027. The area would definitely be part of such a trip. Here are a few websites I have found across a few attempts to make that 3-week Poland trip happen that may be helpful to you:
- Tom Diserens is a PhD-level ecologist based in Białowieża Forest. He is half British, half Polish and has a very nice website on the forest. Here is the webpage with helpful tourist information for the forest in general; here is the webpage with information on the Strict Reserve. Tom indicates you can usually get a hold of guides at the PPTK (Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society) office.
- The PPTK website indicates that "If you want to create a group in English or another foreign language, please select a date and time of departure. We recommend booking in advance, as we have a limited number of foreign-language guides." Unfortunately, their website is not a secure website: http://pttk.bialowieza.pl/info/20/about-us. Tom does not vouch for the quality of service but mentions that the guides he has me "are lovely people."
- Here is a travel blogger's experience of the forest who liked their experience with a PPTK guide: https://perchancetoroam.com/2024/10/05/taking-a-tour-of-the-strictly-protected-area-of-bialowieza-forest-poland/
Hope that helps...
Depending on your plans, there are other ways to do the forest... overnight group trip from Warsaw... Poland Travel has a daytrip from Białystok (the capital of the Poklaskie Voivodeship). Poland Travel is an aggregator of tours, but I used them to help coordinate a trip to Wolf's Lair a few years ago and all went well.
Just posting an update- we ended up booking with PTTK- haven’t gone yet but they’ve been very responsive.
Cool. I missed that the original post was way back in February -- thread brought back to life with the 5/20 post!
I'm interested in learning how things go for you with the PTTK guide. Safe travels!
