Advice on travelling around Poland by train

Hi all,

I'm after your help and guidance here!

I've fairly extensively travelled around Poland over the last few years by train so I'm familiar with how to buy tickets and those kind of general customs. What I'm more specifically looking for is inspiration on the next city to explore based on the current cities train connections.

For example, I need to get from Bielsko-Biala or Zakopane to Szczecinek in 3 days and see as much as possible inbetween. I'd rather not travel for more than 4-5 hours per day.

My current way of working is to just simply go on Google Maps and say to myself "I've never been there and that's about a third of the way so let me check the trains" but I'm hoping I can do it the other way around. I'd like to see the destinations and timings of each train from that station and then check the map based on direct connections and length of journey. Is that possible and if so, where should I look?

I use the pkp.pl site for all my research and ticket buying needs.

This will be in the summer time. I'm aware I can't buy tickets until a month out but I can still use the current months data as a rough idea which will end up being about 95% right based on experience.

Only condition that is 100% is that I need to be in Krakow for one night. Doesn't matter which one.

Current places I've been to in Poland are:

Gdansk

Warsaw

Krakow

Torun

Wroclaw

Lublin

Olsztyn

Gdynia

Poznan

I'd like to visit different places.

Fingers crossed for some good help here!

If it is inspiration you are seeking then it is not a question of trains. You already have extensive travel in Poland by train. You are already looking at websites to refine your knowledge.
Really, you should be giving us advice on train travel in Poland.
But good luck with your inspiration.

If you are looking for a city well connected by train away from the foreign tourists, then I would suggest Grudziadz, another city on the lower Vistula , an area already well familiar to you. Based on your list, you were not too far away as was I in 2003 when visiting Torun.

I had been recommended to see Grudziadz but had my sights set on seeing instead a smaller place also on the Vistula...Chelmno. So we (the Mrs, MIL and I) walked over to the Torun bus depot where numerous lines headed out to small towns in the area of the lower Vistula, and did a day trip there from Torun instead. A pity having to miss Grudziadz...oh, well.

Good that you visited Olsztyn. (on my bucket list too) . Going to Torun from Poznan, where we had transferred, that train's terminus was Olsztyn, well worth seeing for its mere location and significance.

Looks like you need to go to the east. Plenty to explore there - the Biesczady mountains, Zamosc, Przemysl, the Bialowieza forest preserve, concentration camp memorials, etc. I haven't been to these places, but they all sound appealing in research.
