Advice on overnight train from Kraków to Budapest

I did this many years ago. Bought my ticket in advance and it was very efficient. Would definitely do it again.

⁷Its 11.5 hours and not every night of the week. You will arrive about 08:30 in need of a shower that you wont get until checkin time at 14:00.

If you are a couple, a double will cost you about $300 for the two of you. A day train will cost about $80 for the two of you and take 9.5 hours but you lose the entire day. You can figure the other $220 is hotel cost; except a 4 star hotel in Budapest is less.

Ryanair nonstop will cost $45 (starting) and have you in Budapest for lunch.

All 3 are viable options.

I am taking the overnight train from Krakow to Prague on September 28th. I bought the whole 4 person couchette because I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't.

A private compartment takes away the fun of meeting new and unusual folks on the trip.

My last sleeper was me and 3 ladies. They didnt speak a word of English but they spent every moment while still awake worried about me. Brought me (from someplace on the train) tea and shared their food. 22 hours. A different set of 3 ladies on the trip home all young professionals with a little English. They were going to Budapest to catch flights, so I helped them with where to eat before heading on to the airport.

Meeting people along the way is most of the travel fu ln for me.

One thing that I noticed was that when I checked the train on the Polish rail site they only offered seats. I had to go to the Hungarian rail site to find the beds. But I could have been doing something wrong.

We did this last year - had sleeper compartment to ourselves. It was wonderful and fun! Purchased on official country rail site in advance.

Great wisdom. In this case the "official" would be the Hungarian or the Polish site. Do check both and compare prices.
