5.5 hour layover at WAW — time to quickly pop into Warsaw?

Hi everyone, we’ve got a flight coming up from Budapest to the US with a 5.5-hour layover at Chopin Airport (departing Warsaw at 7:30 pm).

We’re on non-Schengen passports, so we'll need to clear passport control. Realistically, is 5.5 hours enough time to take the train into the city for a quick meal or walk around, or is that pushing it with US flight security queues?

Also, does WAW have active luggage storage/lockers inside the terminal for hand baggage, or are we better off carrying it?

Appreciate any quick advice or recent experience!

You have to figure around 45 minutes each way for the train from the airport to the central train station. (Travel time plus waiting time.) The old town is still on the other side of Warsaw so you have to get there. Not much of interest near the train station except hotels, office buildings and a shopping mall.

Upon your return, you will be fighting with people on public transporation trying to get home so it will be crowded.

While Warsaw airport isn' that big, you need to give it time to get through security and then exit immigration if you are headed back to the US. (You could save some time by getting fast track security. It's usually very empty. )

I probably wouldn't do it and instead look to get into a lounge. But your risk tolerance might be different.

So you are going to US with a 5.5-hour layover at Chopin Airport, if so then i would recommend you to skip old town that will consume your 20 min by bus or tram for the train station. Would recommend you to chose to stay near Warszawa Centralna to gab easily Polish meal or a quick walk around the the Palace of Culture and Science before heading straight back.

To avoid stress staying at the airport and booking an executive lounge would be more safer and tension free and your time saver.

That's cutting it short but there probably is time for a quick visit. If you do try it, I would suggest not taking the train, as it's true that the train station isn't very close to much you would want to see, but take a taxi (or Bolt, Uber, whatever you want that's there, I visited Poland before those services existed) directly to the center of Old Town, and then the same back to the airport. Keep in mind that Warsaw's old town, while well worth a visit, isn't genuinely old as it was reconstructed in the 1950s from complete wartime destruction. They did a good job of it though.

I took a Bolt last year from the airport into town. Bolt runs differently at the airport. You schedule a ride then get in the line. When its your turn, you get in the car, show the driver your confirmation code, and then he know where to take you.

Uber works the same way.

The line for Uber was about 20 people long. Bolt was three people.

Then we sat in traffic into town.
