2 additional days-recommendations

I have two back-to back tours in Eastern Europe with two free days and nights between them. Tour one begins in Helsinki, goes through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Warsaw, Krakow, Wieliczka salt mines and Auschwitz. On the third day following this tour, the second tour begins in Prague then goes to Slovakia, Hungry and Budapest. How would you recommend I spend my free days? I could stay an additional night in Krakow and one in Prague, go to Nowa huta, Boleslawiec, etc.

Thank you!

Wow, linking up your posts, you have 3 tours in a row in Eastern Europe from the Baltic states on down to Bulgaria. So for this one, I think I would spend the first interregnum relaxing and taking the waters at Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary).

I am with Slate on this one. Except Karlovy Vary is in the wrong direction.
But, again, without dates, ??? Sould I assume February or August?
How were you plannng to get from Krakow to Prague? That will eat a day ........... maybe. Check the trains and see if there isnt a good two day train adventure with a day halfway. Maybe Olomouc for a day and a night. Its on the way.

So tour #1 ends in Krakow, and tour #2 begins in Prague. I think I'd see how much free time you have on the tours in those cities. IF not much free time, then I would spend a free day in each without a doubt. And you can take an overnight train to transit from one to the other, so maybe a second "free" day in one or the other giving yourself a little rest, laundry and more free time.

Thank you for the replies. Yes, three tours with 11 countries.

Ending in Prague April 13.
Beginning in Prague April 16.
Ending in Budapest April 21. Strongly considering time afterwards in Vienna then
Beginning Bulgaria April 25.
Ending in Romania April 30.

Any other suggestions?? Other ideas based upon travel dates?

Thank You!!

What a great spring you are going to have! I'm curious who you are touring with.

It would be helpful to know what's on your itinerary in Krakow (other than Auschwitz and the salt mine) and Prague. Personally, I'd probably go to Prague early and do some things that aren't included on your tour. Maybe a day trip to Bohemian Switzerland. Or maybe some time to relax, enjoy some good food and drink, and wander through the city at your leisure on what's likely to be a long string of busy days.

I'm doing the tours with Gate 1. I've never used them before so hope I enjoy them as I have three tours. I'll let you know what all we do. We have not received information on all the day-to-day activities, just the larger attractions.

You need not less than 3 full days in Budapest so that might entail another night, dont know. Then I would just fly on to Sofia. If youd did want to hang around Budapest a little longer and arrive in Sofia just in time for the start of the tour there are a few decent day trips out of Budapest, but depends on your interests. Personally I would spend at least part of one day in the back seat of a WWI biplane, then Szentendre or even Eger for a night. If you did want to go to Vienna, you are going to want to spend at least 3 full days there. If not, then save it for when you can. If budget ever becomes an issue, think twice about Vienna until you can do it right. Too good to do it half way then never get back because its a repeat.

So… my thoughts.

  • April 14 & 15, stay in Prague. Do laundry, rest, do a day trip if you feel like it - and be ready to start on the next tour.
  • April 22-23, stay in Budapest. Do laundry, see more Budapest - there’s plenty and you won’t have seen it all by far. (looks like you have 2 days Prague, 2 days Bratislava, and 2 days Budapest.)
  • April 24, head on to Bulgaria (I assume Sofia) and be there to start the next tour.
    • April 30, plan to spend more time in Romania. 5 days for Bulgaria AND Romania? That is basically Sofia and Bucharest. I would at least find a way to get to the Maramures area of Romania also.
