We are trying to decide which NiaN overnight tour in May to choose from Fjord Tours.com - the over night Naeroyfjord tour or the Sogenfjord tour. We will be staying at the Vangsgaarden Gjestgiveri hotel in Aurland. Any help on deciding between the two would appreciated. Also, any suggestions during our stay in Aurland - restaurants etc. Thanks, Jim S.
Well, keep in mind that I have not been there yet but I'm planning a trip in July and from what everyone has told me, the Naeroyfjord is one of the most beautiful there is.
The Naeroyfjord is a narrow, more intimate fjord surrounded by dramatic steep mountains. It is what I call the Viking Cruise type fjord. The Sognefjord is much wider, giving more of a river experience.
Be sure to visit Stegastein Viewpoint for the spectacular views above the Aurlandsfjord. And try to get to the Borgund Stave Church.
I really enjoyed staying in a cabin directly on the water at Vangsgaarden Gjestgiveri. In the evening we watched as the cruise ships left Flam all lit up. We had a kitchen so we bought food at Spar (very close), but we had pizza and beer at the Gastro Pub right at the hotel. We ate breakfast at Marianne Bakeri & Cafe.
We arrived at Aurland via Bjørgavegen from the north. We did Geirangerfjord prior to getting to Aurland, so I'm no help on the fjord question.
The Sogenfjord is almost lake like. It’s peaceful and smooth and quite scenic when you approach the shore when you see the landscapes and the waterfalls. But it’s the narrow fjords like the Naeroyfjord that are spectacular.
