Voss or Flam and Balestrand

If anyone has thoughts on Voss vs Flam as a base for a trip to Norway late June, I’d be grateful. Another option is to do two nights in Balestrand coupled with a night in Flam (or Voss).

We will have a total of about 6-9 days in Norway (length depends on whether we forgo a stop in Sweden to give more time in Norway). Either way we will fly into Bergen and out of Oslo with a night or two in each on either end.

We’d prefer to stick to public transit — though open to a car rental if that gives us more flexibility for touring / hiking and getting on to fjords.

We plan to take the train from Bergen or Myrdal to Oslo. Guidance on how far out to book (and how best to do that from US) also appreciated.

Thank you (again)!

With the exception of the rather humdrum Bergen-Voss rail segment, the components of the Norway-in-a-Nutshell route are very scenic and are therefore worth completing. The include (approaching from Bergen):

  • Voss-Gudvangen bus (pay driver)
  • Gudvangen-Flam ferry on Naeroyfjord (tickets from NorwaysBest.com)
  • Flamsbana train Flam-Myrdal (buy as part of through-ticket to Oslo
  • Myrdal-Oslo train (tickets from vy.no, same as for the Bergen-Voss train)

The Myrdal-Oslo train tickets can be considerably cheaper purchased well in advance, and individual trains do sell out (I'd guess not terribly far in advance but cannot guarantee that). As far as I know, the Flamsbana and ferry tickets are rather expensive but don't creep upward in price as the travel date approaches, but perhaps someone else has different information.

All those scenic transportation links are on the south side of the Sognefjord, as are Flam and Voss. Balestrand is said to be quite attractive but is on the north side of the fjord, so you'd need to explore ferry schedules across the fjord before committing to staying there. The express boat to/from Bergen stops at Balestrand and Flam but runs only once or twice a day. I think getting across the fjord via other ferries would be difficult if not impossible if you didn't have a car, because I don't think those ferries depart from Flam or (nearby) Aurland.

Flam is a rather plain town in a magnificent, fjord-side setting that on many days is spoiled by the presence of a hulking cruise ship. I never saw many people at all in Flam; clearly the cruisers piled onto smaller boats or tour buses and left town quickly.

Voss isn't located on a fjord, but it's in an area that I've read has a variety of options for outdoor activities (not my thing, so I haven't researched that). If money is a concern, check prices for everything before building your trip around any particular activity. Just about everything in Norway is expensive, even buses running from town to town.

The folks who've stayed in Balestrand have really enjoyed it, but it's easier to take full advantage of that less-touristy area if you have a rental car. Most of the buses in the fjord area run extremely infrequently, sometimes just once a day. Rick's guidebook specifically says staying in Balestrand isn't recommended unless you have at least 2 or 3 nights.

Lodging in that (fjord) area is limited, pricey and in high demand. I think June isn't quite as bad as July-August, but pickings are probably already slim in Flam (the most convenient place to stay without a car). I think Voss might be easier, and for variety of outdoor activities it might well be better for you. I'd recommend booking something cancellable immediately and then continuing your research if you want to. Otherwise, you may find yourself with few choices, all of them poorly located or expensive. If you decide to rent a car, there will be more-rural options available at lower prices, and those of us who depend on public transportation will thank you very much for not taking one of the few rooms available in Flam!

There's not a great deal of traffic on the Norway forum here. It wouldn't be an impossible task to scroll back through the postings, looking for thread titles about visiting the fjord area. You'll find a few trip reports from people who rented cars and drove around the area north of the Sognefjord.

Hello again — we are now considering Flam vs Aurland for two nights between Bergen and Oslo to see fjords and environs. Appreciate thoughts! This would be late June and we have accommodation options in both.

After seeing Flam for a few hours and staying in Aurland, I would choose Aurland. But, if you aren't going to have a car, Flam would be easier for public transportation. That's about the other pro I can think of with choosing Flam.

Thanks very much for the reply @mnannie how many nights were you in Aurland? And did you do day trips and was it possible given more limited public transportation — we also won’t have a car.

Without a car, you won't have a lot of efficient options in that area, because public transportation is limited. I assume you're following the Nutshell route and are already planning on the Flamsbana, the Naeroyfjord ferry and the bus between Gudvangen and Voss. If you want more time actually on the water, I think there are RIB trips from Flam. There's a viewpoint not terribly far away, and there must be bus tours that run up there. I wanted to see the Borgund Stave Church badly enough that I spent two nights in Flam to make that happen, then it almost didn't because the bus left Flam so late that I only had 40 minutes at Borgund. I don't think many people would be thrilled at paying Norwegian hotel prices for two nights in order to see one stave church.

Active folks can rent bikes and ride down to Flam from Myrdal. And there's hiking in the area, of course.

Any particular kind of thoughts you are looking for?

Flåm is a much smaller place, calling it a town is a very generous use of the word to describe a place with 250 inhabitants. But it is popular to visit, and I'd suggest that you check if there are any cruise ships in Flåm when you plan to visit. Aurland is a slightly larger place that might actually be called a town. Meaning there is a bit more service available. And less cruise crowds…

Voss is a much larger place, a "proper town". Yes, it's not located on a fjord, but I can't see why that would matter. It is on a lake, and just by looking at it you won't be able to tell the difference. The advantage of being on a lake instead of a fjord is that there are no cruise ships.

We only did one night in Aurland and we had a car.

We had two nights in Aurland at Vangsgaarden hotel/guesthouse.

We rented one of their cabins at the edge of the water. The view was amazing!
