Couple in mid-70s, active. Planning on one week in Norway. We like to not be on the move all the time. Prefer exploring city, hiking in nature, good food, touring on foot, taking day trip.
We will fly in from London to Bergen. Divided the time with 3 nights in Bergen and 3 nights in Voss. Is this a good idea.?
Welcome suggestions . Thanks!
I suppose it would depend on what you want to see and do. When are you traveling?
There's plenty to keep you busy in Bergen- walking tours, explore the Bryggen, funicular up the mountain, hiking, more.
How do you plan to get to Voss? Car or train/bus?
What are you planning for Voss? Are you into extreme sports? Skydiving, whitewater rafting, mountain biking? Olympic skiing athletes train in the area.
Have you looked into Oslo? Good food, explore on foot or tram or ferry, parks. museums of all description from art to outdoor folk museum.
You could connect Bergen to Oslo via the Norway in a Nutshell day tour. It's the scenic route using trains, bus and ferry to see fjords, mountain views and waterfalls. You can purchase a package with all the components or you can piece it together yourself. You could even spend a night enroute if lodging is available. This would allow you to add kayaking, hiking or a tour to Stegastein Viewpoint to see the magnificent fjords from above.
Enjoy beautiful Norway!
My question was asked....what do you plan to do in Voss.
My suggestion would be similar to the above post. Look into doing Norway in a Nutshell but spend a couple of nights in Flam. You could spend the entra time there exploring the fjord and nearby towns.
You could then continue on to Oslo.
Voss is a regional hub with a few scenic places but NOT located at a fjord.
Have a look at Eidfjord instead of Voss. It is directly located at Eidfjord, a branch of Hardangerfjord. Famous Vøringsfossen is a day trip recommendation from there.
Utne is another recommendation directly located at Hardangerfjord. The views from ferries from / to Utne are very scenic. There is also a folk museum. The hills nearby are possible hiking trails. National park Folgefonna can be a day trip.
The website of Hardangerfjord gives a lot of inspirations.
We stopped in Voss to pick up and drop off a car. It’s the only place in the center of Norway where you’re going to find a train station and car rental place. Other than that, it’s just a town.
We liked Bergen a lot. Oslo a little less. We took a side trip to Lillehammer/Jotunheimen that we enjoyed via car.
Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions and questions. We are revising our plans. Our dates are July 31 - August 5,..very soon!
Now looking at staying in Bergen for 2 nights and a 2 day dyi NIN to Flam with return train to Bergen. I think this may suit our interests and pace nicely given the limited time we have in Norway. Appreciate your help!
Book your Flåm lodging ASAP. Limited availability and usually booked up months in advance.
Also, you may want to look at Porter Service to send your bags from your Bergen to your Oslo hotel. We used them 2 years ago and only travelled with a small backpack between us for our overnight in Flåm. It was a nice little luxury.
And don't miss the Stegastein Viewpoint tour.
Several transportation questions.
Am trying to purchase bus ticket from Bergen Airport to the central bus station in Bergen. Is this advisable to purchase it now for a 31 July arrival? If so, what if my flight is delayed, will I be able to use the purchased ticket on the next departure to the City?
If purchased online, will the cost reflect my 'senior status' and I will get a 50% discount?
How close is the Bergen Bus Station to the Bergen Railroad station? Walkable?
Many thanks!
I would just take the Bybanen- the light rail. It drops you at Bergen railway station.
Take the light rail. Straight shot. It takes about 40 minutes.
Thanks for all your guidance. I'm working on incorporating your suggestions to make our Norway visit easy and interesting.
