Trondheim

It seems very far away. Is it worth it? We’ll be on the west side of Norway for about a week but I’m wondering if the only(best) way to go is by a cruise?

I liked Trondheim. Spent three days there in August 2019.

Did a walking tour with a guide through the tourist office, visited Nidaros Cathedral, National Museum of Decorative Arts, NTNU Museum, and Trondelag Sverresborg open-air folk museum, just outside of town — it’s on a public bus line. Also Pirbadet indoor water park swim and sauna facility right on the waterfront.

Thon Hotel Trondheim — had a tiny but well equipped room, inexpensive, centrally located and near major bus lines.

This website was helpful for things to do and how to get around:

I liked Trondheim, too, but I had a lot more time in Norway than you do. Even for me there were trade-offs to be made. Each traveler has to prioritize and consider the logistics of getting to potential destinations. Personally, I'd rank Oslo, seeing one of the most scenic fjords, and also Bergen ahead of Trondheim, with the location of Trondheim being a factor. It's very convenient to see Oslo and Bergen and use the scenic Norway in a Nutshell route to link them. That's why the Nutshell route is so popular with people not spending much time in Norway.

When is your trip? Exactly how many nights do you have available to spend in Norway? Is the about-a-week in Norway the entire trip, or just part of it? If Norway is only part of your itinerary, where will you be before Norway? After Norway? What sorts of things do you want to do and see--museums (what kind?), scenery, etc.

Western Norway tends to be very rainy, so you need to consider that if you rush through a lot of places, especially on that side of the country, you might not have a lot of great weather. It's hard to fully appreciate traveling through a beautiful fjord when it's foggy and raining a lot.

There are flights to Trondheim from Oslo, Bergen and quite a number of other places both inside and outside Norway.

Far away is a relative expression and depends on where you'll be. Trondheim is on the west side of Norway and pretty easy to reach. In general it is underrated and well worth a visit, but as mentioned it depends a lot on what your plan for the week is.

I am far from claiming that the only way to see Trondheim is a cruise. I will say that my favorite cruise of all time went up the coast of Norway and included Trondheim, the Lofoten Islands, and The North Cape as well as other ports.

Thank you all for your thoughts on Trondheim. We’ll be there early to middle June. Visiting some family near Balestrand. Spending about a week in Norway and a week in Denmark. I was looking for a new place to visit having taken this journey before. Just deciding which spots to revisit and if we want to seek out something new.

Aah, a repeat visit to Norway. That would put Trondheim higher on my list. I also liked Alesund a lot; I'm a huge fan of Jugenstil/Art Nouveau architecture. The ferries run overnight from Alesund to Trondheim.

Interesting perspective. I’m waiting for the Rick Steves Scandinavian book. Not even an old one available to me in my part of west Texas

We’ll be there early to middle June.

Info: begin of June there is a weekend when students are visited by their families (Russefeiring), so hotel prices can be higher on this one weekend in Trondheim and other university towns. We had this begin of June 2023 in Trondheim. The whole Russ celebrations can last weeks from what I read. Was interesting to see families and students celebrating in retaurants. Our dinner at AiSuma Restaurant was very good.
