I ran into trouble finding lodging in the Sognefjord region and managed to find something reasonable in Sogndal and went ahead and booked it without checking the logistics (crap). I would appreciate any advice on getting to Sogndal from Oslo in one day. We would rather not rent a car. The other problem is how do I fit in a trip on Flamsbana? We have two nights in Sogndal but there doesn't appear to be a boat service that will get us over to Flam and the bus trip is several hours long. Any ideas?
Sogndal to Oslo has a twice daily bus, # Vy170. Because of the geography it takes 6 1/2 hours.
However Sogndal also has an airfield, with Wideroe flights to Oslo and Bergen.
There is no ferry from Sogndal to Flam direct, the bus takes so long because it has to use a cross fjord ferry on the way.
As an example of what is possible fly from Sogndal at 0645, Bergen arrive 0720, Tram from the airport to the railway station, train depart 1036 Myrdal 1257/1315 Flam arrive 1405. Boat to Gudvangen depart 1500 Gudvangen arrive 1700
Norway Bus Ekspress #420 departs Gudvangen E16 junction 1805 Sogndal arrive 2017 calling Flam at 1830
When are you traveling? And where are you going after Sogndal?
If you're determined to do the Flåmsbana, here is one possibility
- Train to Myrdal
- Flåmsbana to Flåm
- bus to Sogndal
It will be a long day. There are several departures from Oslo to choose from. The bus leaves Flåm at 6:30 pm and arrives at the Sogndal Skysstasjon 8:17 pm.
