A group of us, 2 couples, all over 65, had planned to rent a car in Bergen and travel through the Setesdal Valley to Kristiansand, where we would leave the car. It was to be a one day trip. We were going to stay the night in Kristiansan and cross into Denmark the next morning. It seems, however, that the cost to rent the car is beyond our budget. Any suggestions? We have a reservation in Kristiansand for the night, but we could cancel. Is there a train? I cannot find a daytime train from Bergen to Kristiansand.
The terrain along that coast is limiting your options. There's no direct train line; trains go via Oslo. Fjord Line has an 18-hour overnight ferry from Bergen to Hirtshals.
I would suggest going to rome2rio.com. Type in Bergen to Kristiansand to see all of the options. I've done this route before and it's just difficult because of all the waterways between these two towns. The fastest route is to drive...the cheapest way is by bus but that takes around 10 hours...there are no trains between these two towns because of all the fjords and inlets. I will say that the ferry ride is really nice! Beautiful coastline, the cleanest air you can imagine, and an exhilarating ride!
