Train Tickets with Vy, Voss to Bergen spring/summer 2025

Hello,

I see all that has been posted over the past few years regarding travel between Oslo and Bergen. I also have booked everything myself. The recent responses to an inquiry last week is helpful to feel more relaxed about availability of buses to Voss after arriving into Gudvangen. My travel through Gudvangen to Bergen is July 1st. I see it was suggested to purchase the train ticket from Voss to Bergen ahead. For anyone who has more recently experienced this route , are trains selling out ? I will be taking the train in two weeks is it best to have the ticket in hand even if a bus may be late etc. ?

Thanks Kindly,
Sheila

I've not been recently but over the years have done a fair bit of independent travelling on that line, unconnected with Norway in a Nutshell.
Either based in Bergen or before/after a Hurtigruten trip.
What many people don't realise is that between Voss and Bergen there is also a near hourly regional train service (a few of them start back at Myrdal or even further).
Those trains have no assigned seating and cannot sell out. They call all stations, many of which are flag (request) stops for local traffic.
Locals can't book months or weeks in advance. They need to travel as and when.
For instance there is a long distance express from Voss to Bergen at just before 6pm - reservations required (potentially sells out), full of NiN people.
That is followed 10 minutes later by an all stations regional, and an hour or so later by another regional.
I know which I'm catching - not the express!
The conventional story serves a very real purpose in keeping all the nutshellers together just as the tourist boats from Flam to Gudvangen stop the local ferry service from being overwhelmed, but it is not the whole story.

The advice to prepurchase tickets from Voss to Bergen is to make things easier for you at the Voss train station.

Keep this in mind, there will probably be several hundreds of passengers on your Flåm to Gudvangen ferry. Most of these passengers will board one of the many buses to Voss. Most of those passengers will be taking the train to Bergen. Some will have pre purchased train tickets. Some will buy them at the station.

Thanks very much for the responses. It is especially helpful to understand the local train option. Totally makes sense that residents do not live planning ahead with such precision. It may not even be an inconvenience to just arrive and get the next train. Thank you again for taking the time to share the information.
